Heater Core Question

I have the heater core out of my GT and I have a simple question. When I flushed the core, water would only flow in one direction. Is there a check valve in the core? After a few minutes, the water flowed clear. The inlet and outlet pipes, which connect to the heater hoses are still connected to the core.

I just checked my 4 and all 4 flow both ways- man are my hands cold! HTH, BTW mine still have the inlet and outlet pipes connected as well.
