Unanswered: Heater Box

I was working on my 73 GT and was looking at the heater box trying to figure out what im going to be doing when I go to fit my DSD in...I noticed the 2 lines coming out of the car for the heater core, and then below there, there is 2 more holes with rubber groments on them...

My question is, what are these extra 2 holes for in the heater box? The one has a rag in it, and the one is just open...I stuck my finger in there and it felt like there is foam in there...

if i'm not mistaken, those are drainage holes for the top of the firewall where the wiper motor/grill mesh is, and the other is to let antifreeze out of the heaterbox, in the event that the heatercore started to leak its better to drain it to the ground than to flood your floorboard.

Is there something wrong with yours? I think I have a good one on the shelf but it hasn't been tested. If yours isn't flowing properly then try flushing it with water first in one direction then the other until the crud is dislodged.

Probably not on a shelf. You're right though, nice ones are few and far between.

Try me for something else though. You never know!

Heater box

I have a 71 GT with a bad blower motor. I have found a new blower but for the life of me I can't figure out how to get the old heater box out from under the dash. Do I have to remove the windshield and the dash before iIcan get to the blower motor? Help anyone!

Chief

Chief, the dash and instrument panel have to come out to access the heater assembly. Preferably, the windshield too, but not necessarily, it just makes getting to the screws at the base of the window easier. No matter how you look at it, not an easy overnight job. HTH.

Try a cabinet screw driver. They have longer than normal shafts which makes it a little easier.

HTH,

Next time I take a dash out I think I will get one of those fancy screwdrivers with a flex-shaft, I think craftsman makes something like it.

Jordan, if you have a 1/4" drive ratchet or screw handle with a hex bit screw driver holder, you can get a 6" long 1/4" spring drive extension that will do the job nicely. The biggest problem I had with Willit? was getting the screws at the base of the windshield started. Once I had them started a turn or two, the installation was fairly easy. Having the windshield out made positioning the dash and starting the screws really easy, even with the new rebuilt dash from JustDashes.

The last time I put my dash in the windshield was out as well and that makes the job a breeze.
