How much truth is behind this?
Browsing through webpages, I found some information I did not know. Just wondering how much truth is behind it..
"the only Opel ever sold by GM of Canada was the 1971 and 1972 GT" "The only German built Opel sold in the U.S. recently is the Cadillac Catera. It is actually a German Opel with a Cadillac grille" |

Hmm, I doubt it, as I owned a '68 Kadett Wagon (1.5 L) back in 1984, and they were fairly common in Canada in the '60's and '70's. I have also seen quite a few Manta's in Canada. I am pretty sure that GT's were sold in Canada in 1970 (not certain about '73). But aside from Rob Cassidy (aka Rionart), I had never seen an Opel 1900 (aka Ascona) in Canada until I bought my Tacoma-sourced '75 SportWagon.
True, the Catera is an Opel Omega with typical GM badge engineering, although "dumbed down" for the North American market (no manual transmission, no Irmscher version). Another "sort of" recent North American Opel is the Saturn L series, based on the Opel Vectra, and uses that drive-train, but assembled in the U.S. But the second generation Catera (post '99) wasn't sold in Canada. |
