Ive gone 110mph in my manta/ascona
This one time I cruised at 90 for about an hour strait in my mantscona, and for about two months after that the engine sounded like a washing machine. My dad and i couldnt figure out what was making the noise so i let it slide. Drove it for another two weeks, and then my car got stolen. 3 months later i got it back and running but it still made the noise, so i started pulling stuff off of it. first the radiator, then the fan, as i was doing so i noticed there was some slop in the fan, so i wiggled the water pump (with the pulley off) and thats when i found the problem, i fried the bearings in the water pump and it had about 1/4" of slop in it as i wiggled it up and down. I immediatley replaced the water pump and it hasnt made a noise since. Ive only driven it 20 miles since then even though its been 3 months. ![]() I currently drive a 83 vandura, i got that thing up to 90mph (whew!) with me and my 7 freinds in it my friend had a 94 z28 we got that up to 120mph that same friend later got a 98 bmw m3 we went 125 when some punks in their moms grand prix tried to race us. that was funny. |

The fastest I've gone in the GT is only 55 or so. But I've gone 140-145 in a 1989 Toyota Celica. I was on a three lane wide interstate and just pedal to the metal! I was smart though, there was nobody around, just me and the open road..... and downtown portland oregon, but hey, why not!?

how fast is your opel GT
A few years ago, when my '72 GT was new, I "pushed the metal to the floor" on a back country road and had it up to 110 mph. I then chickened out, because I knew if a farmer would happen to pull out of his lane, I would be a goner. I still have this car, and after completing 2 others, am planning to bring it back!

Back in '84 I had my stock GT, with over 100K on the engine up to 105 mph.
It was at night and I saw red pieces of carbon in my rear view mirror from the tailpipe. No damage, but it scared the H_ll out me . The highest I have had it recently is 70.

I bought my first gt from a guy who was selling it to pay for the speeding ticket, he was clocked on radar at 134 mph and speeding up still. To give you an idea of how long ago this was, the ticket was $720, I tried it to see if it could get up there and backed out at 125 mph. It had a 1.9l, but it may have been touched a bit, I know the guy I bought it from was touched, he had a cast on a full length cast on a broken leg when he got the ticket!!!! Boy, do I miss that car

I decided one night around 2AM to see what my 69 GT could do. With myself and one other person in the car, the speedometer read 126. It still wanted to go, too! I backed off, and good thing. From that point on I had a rod knocking.
Only mod I can remember was a Weber carb. I also remember talking to a DPS officer way back when (15 years?), and he said that his daughter owned a 68 brand new, gold with 2 black racing stripes. He said that he would take it out on a regular basis and peg the speedo's 150. Hence the stupid 126 on my part.

Mooovin'
A trip to work in the morning yielded results a little shy of 130 mph, which wasn't topped out. Not sure what the RPMs were, as going almost 130 mph demands more of my concentration on I-95. It's a 1.9l block, with a 2.0l head, side exhaust, Weber 38 DGAS. Very scary.

100 mph in a '74 Manta many times. I also would see sparks from the exhaust if I held it there a while.
I have recorded sustained 1.4 lateral g's (both left and right) in my '72 autocross Manta with a data acquisition system. Top speed calculates out to about 94 mph with the 3.67 rear gear and 20" tall tires. |

The gt topped out at nearly 100 today with another person in it and a full take of gas....and a slight hill hehe... but that was at 9000ft so i was a bit down on power (and its a low compression 73). I dont think i'd want to go much faster then that on stock suspension and brakes. I've done a 170 on a turbo pasta rocket, bugs get very very large and scary at that speed

I have a 71 GT 1.9 motor, 30 over pistons, 252 adv. dur. cam .420" lift, pacesetter header, 2" to 2 1/4" DynoMax muffler then split 2 1/4" to 3 1/2" Hooker resonator tips, 38 DGAS, on a ported intake manifold, with Crane Ignition. Well that combination has gotten me all the way to 135MPH. Have suprised many a Mustang and import. I have never had a front end floating problem with a front air dam. I tell you though, that car rides so smooth at 110+.

I've been 95 MPH in my 73 Opel GT, 147 MPH (in 9.13 seconds) in my 64 blown Nova and 183 in my 97 Viper GTS and believe it or not, the scariest ride was the Opel (until I completely rebuilt the suspension).
I am now thinking I need a new engine for the Opel. Anyone know of a fresh 2.0 for sale????? Fastnufs Home Page |
