From 1970 Magazine Road Tests

Solid lifter, 102HP 1.9L motor with 4-speed g/box

1969 Standing 1/4 Mile - 17.4 seconds @ 79 mph

1970 Standing 1/4 Mile - 17.3 seconds @ 75 mph

Can't find any for the automatic trans - or the later low compression motor!

1/4 mile

I use to run my 70 gt with a 1.9 on the 1/4 mile back when it was new,Only slight mods like the muffler. if i remember right it ran in the high 15's but that was a long time ago. I remember i would go into 4th gear as i went through the end of the 1/4 mile, Never got beat in class,Q pure stock. That was at Tampa dragway on 301 in tampa Fl. thous were the days.

I raced my GT's at the drag strip.

just do a search on davegt74 or Davegt27

dyno run is in the picture area

started at around 19.2

went to 18.8 with 1.5 head (1.9 valves) and carb

18.5 with 1.5 head 3.67 rear and 1.9 FI

ran that setup for a few years

then went to 17.3

bought GT race car

my notes say

started 16.694 @71.30 mph short time 2.296 (missed shift)
rev limiter set at 7000 rpm

second time out

16.667 @79.45 mph 2.297 short time

third time out 16.4

Sept 96
16.047 @ 79.72 short time 2.234 22' tall slicks

had head redone

14.9 @ 88mph 20' slicks (best time)---gear limited with the race GT 5.28 final drive

According to the Magazines of the Day...

Here are some specs from the "Brooklands Books Opel GT 1968 - 1973" Notice the weight of the 1.1 versus the 1.9, and the degradation of performance in the auto tranny and low compression models:

Page 17, an article from Sports Car World magazine Nov 1968 titled "GM's (Germany) New GT":
1969 1.1 GT 4-speed, kerb weight 1863 lb, top speed 95 mph, 0-60 mph in 16.3 sec

Page 31, an article from Motorcade magazine June 1969:
1969 1900 cc GT 4-speed, curb weight 2072 lbs., top speed 115 mph, standing 1/4 mile 17.3 secs. 75 mph, 0-60 mph 11.5 secs.

Page 33, Road & Track road test June 1969:
1.9 litre 4-speed, curb weight 2105 lb, test weight 2420 lb (with driver and fuel etc.), top speed 111 mph, standing 1/4 mile 17.7 sec, 77 mph, 0-60 mph 10.8 sec.

Page 43, Car Life Road Test, June 1969:
1.9 litre 4-speed, curb weight 2070 lb, test weight 2380 lb, top speed 111 mph, standing 1/4 mile 17.4 sec, 79 mph, 0-60 mph 10.2 sec.

Page 51 GM ad:
Curb weight:
1.1 SR engine: 1881 lbs
1.9 engine: 2109 lbs

Page 68, Motor Magazine (Britain) June 20 1970:
1.9 litre AUTO, curb weight 18.5 cwt, test weight 22.3 cwt, top speed 108.3 mph, standing 1/4 mile 18.6 sec, no speed given, 0-60 mph 12.0 sec.

Page 80, Road & Track July 1971:
1.9 litre LOW COMPRESSION (7.6:1) 4-speed, curb weight 2110 lb, test weight 2500 lb, top speed 110 mph, standing 1/4 mile 18.4 sec, 74 mph, 0-60 mph 11.9 sec.

That's what always puzzled me, how all the magazine tests of the day had different weights.

In an attempt to get the following numbers for my EV conversion (Yes.. it has gone from a Manta to the Kadett to a GT Now) and keep it all in one thread we can find later.. I have to ask.

Given we know these numbers (From GM and assorted magazines) :

1969 1.1 GT 4-speed, curb weight 1863 - 1881 lbs

1969 1900 cc GT 4-speed, curb weight 2070 - 2109 lb

What is the approximate wieght of:

1.1L Motor ( W/ Accessories )

1.9L Motor ( W/ Accessories ) - 320 lbs? ( 275 lbs, +/-45 lbs Manifolds, Alternator, Carb, Starter, etc.. )

Manual Transmission - 75 lbs ?

Automatic Transmission - 125 lbs ?

1.1L Front suspension & Engine cradle

1.9L Front suspension & Engine cradle

1.1L Rear end (w/ brakes)

1.9L Rear end (w/ brakes) - 200 lbs?

Weight of exhaust - 20 lbs ?

Wieght of gas tank - 10 lbs ?

Wieght of radiator and hoses - 10 lbs ?

Wieght of headlight buckets & assembly w/ cables, etc.. - 25 lbs ?

Trying to lighten the load of the EV as much as possible.. so thinking of using a 1.1L rear end.

I found a 3.18 will be best for my top speed of the EV if I go direct drive, then I may stick with a Kadett rear end I do have that has a 3.18 gear in it.

But if the wieght is distinctively lower between the rear ends, then I may go for the lighter rear end instead.

I assume the curb wieghts do not include fluids, maybe the spare tire or driver either, because that would just about account for the 2400-2500 "test wieghts" listed by a few magazines.

Any help here would be great. I am sure others doing EV< or engine transplants would be curious as well.

My GT with a fiberglass nose weighed in at 1826 without the driver

so a 1.9 GT can get down pretty low with a little effort

Where can you get the nose? and how much work was it to install?

The links have been posted several times

so you might have to do a search

I am in Iraq so I don't have any of my saved links

on the install I would recommend doing it yourself

Ive been taking classes at the local jr college (I hope to start up again this summer)

anyway the class would have all the info and tools you would need

the latests thing is to glue the body panels on (no kidding thats what the instructor told me)

you could get a carbon fiber hood done at RaceOn USA.com (I remember that name since they did a fiberglass hood for my MR2) but you would have to send them an example

My 1970 GT 1.9 with cam and a few coodies (Weber, header, double wound valve springs, and electronic ignition) ran 16.4 at Great Lakes Drag Way in Union Grove a few years back.
