Identification

Hello, I'm new to the Opel world. I am going to look at a 1969 Opel GT this afternoon. The owner doesn't know which engine is in the car. What can I look at on the engine to tell the difference between the 1.1 and 1.9? Will the ID (VIN) give the information? What are the major bad spots to look for?

Thanks

Does the 1.1 have 2 1 barrel carbs and the 1.9 have a single 2 barrel? Does all the GT's have front disc brakes?

Thanks
Darin

yes, I belieive all GT's have front disc brakes, and yes, the 1.9 is a 2 barrel carb, also look for rot along the bottom of the doors and along the wheel wells. A 1.9 will also have the numbers stamped in the block itself. its rather easy to decipher the differance,s.

The pictures are great! Thanks. Would you de-value the car if it is a 1.1? The guy said that he has a weber carb that goes with it. I would guess it is the 1.9. Can you get replacement body panels for the cars? How about dash pads? He said this one is cracked up bad. He also said that the area that the battery set in was the worse rust. Is this common?

This deal also comes with a complete parts car.

This is good infor. Thanks!!

A original 1.1.car is actually much rarer.Body panels are available, but a bit pricey, better to use a donor car/sheet metal for things like that. Dashpads are relatively inexpensive and are readily available. And YES>>>> the battery box is ALWAYS the first thing to go on a GT then the rockers, doors, wheelwells, floors, I would check out the rest of the nose on the car as well. This can become rather difficult to repair and time consuming/expensive.I would add a bit of advice and say that its always best to consider restoring a good condition car to start with, as the more you strip down, the more problems you discover. It can become a real can of worms very fast. Rust free GT's are far and few,but.... the cleaner the btter!

Thanks for the information. I will just have to see what everything looks like. The guy is asking 1200.00 for both cars.
