Blowing Smoke
I bet if you could manufacture these items and list them on ebay they would sell like hotcakes (another saying of unknown origin) I think they might be required lab equipment for Political Science, Law School and New & Used Auto Sales. In consideration of fair play they should also be available as a training tool to anyone that wished to embark on a career where instead of dazzling people with wisdom they want to baffle people with

During World War II "get the lead out" was a very popular phrase, almost as popular as the phrase of which it was a shorter and less controversial form, namely, "Get the lead out of your ass!" Obviously, it meant "Get going, move with a little more celerity!" (From the internet)

Can't help myself....
SELL LIKE HOT CAKES - "Hot cakes cooked in bear grease or pork lard were popular from earliest times in American. First made of cornmeal, the griddle cakes or pancakes were of course best when served piping hot and were often sold at church benefits, fairs, and other functions. So popular were they that by the beginning of the 19th century 'to sell like hot cakes' was a familiar expression for anything that sold very quickly, effortlessly, and in quantity." From "Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins" by Robert Hendrickson (Facts on File, New York, 1997)

More Smoke Screens
Actually this method lead to other innovations, such as artificial resisatation, where the smoke was found to be inhaled by the rectum on the compression stroke and exhaled on the exhaust stroke. A tin cover was invented to replace the perferated paper so as not to catch the carpet on fire by exhaust. This eventually lead to the invention of the internal combustion engine and the muffler. As for the sailor ever smoking that pipe again, that lead to the invention of changable stems for pipes in order to save money by not having to replace the entire unit. These replaceable stems where also varied in length and size to fit various rectums
