Welcome to the group Harold. It's good to have another racer on board. I'm looking forward to following your progress. It looks like you got someones aborted drag car project.

Hey Harold, Where in central WI are you? There are a number of us in Southeastern, WI who get together periodically over the summer. Watch the Greater Milwaukee Opelers forum. What type of racing are you planning for? One of our site members (AnastosMotors) is from Kenosha and he races two Opels in SCCA classes. Welcome aboard!

I am from Stevens Point. I have talked a little with AnastosMotors, he hooked me up with some links. WOW you Opelers an all like a big family willing to help thats awsome. I am very glad to be here.

Well I am not doing the racing my friend is driving. Its gonna be a street legal car that he wants to take to Road America an the only class it fits in is the GT class. He doesnt plan on racing competitiveI have spoke to Brian at SCCA an he has directed me over to some sites also.

What kind of motor is that? Looks like you cut the floor pan out to build a whole new firewall and flooring to accomodate the new motor and transmission.

Welcome aboard, Harold!
Nice jig you've got there.
That, guys, is step one to building a race car. You get the car firmly attached to a rigid, straight, level platform.
Looking good so far.

No Opels were harmed in the filming of this movie.
However two Mustangs, a Pinto, and a Capri were hospitalized.
One Mustang was euthanized the next morning.

Actually the car was done someplace else with erw tubing an the driver didnt fit in the car. So everything had to be removed. I have built tube frame cars that meet sfi specs for NHRA. This is the first full tube frame car for SCCA. I am open for everyone ideas please help me along the way. This car will be street driven, will cert for NHRA as well as SCCA.

The motor is V6 Buick Grand National motor. I have been told that turbos are not allowed in the GT class. Please understand this is not being built to be raced soley at SCCA events it will probably only go a few times so he can say that he raced it at Road America.

I hope this makes since to everyone an any input will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
FURO

There are lots of Performance driving events at Road America.
They are lots of fun. Look at Road America web site and/or BMW, Porsche
club. Road America is very interesting, fast road race track.
It is hard on race cars.

I wonder though, if the cage rules will satisfy both sanctioning bodies? SCCA has things that NHRA does not have, and vice-versa. Regardless, it'll be a tough stretch to make a GT-class car street legal. Not saying it can't be done, but either will be a huge compromise (street or race) and it likely won't be road legal after the fact.

Have you considered trying to run NASA road racing events? It's certainly possible to run the car as a road legal car as long as it satisfies the safety rules. And they have far more classes where it can be run, thereby opening the doors to a lot more (fun) mods, such as turbos and whatnot. They use a power-to-weight ratio calculator. SCCA has very strict guidelines in terms of what you can and cannot do. I'm not anti-SCCA (been a member for 21 years), but NASA has managed to put the fun back into racing, and aren't stricken by so many confining rules.

Well I have been talking to the driver an he is not willing to give up the turbo. So I really dont know where this car will fit. Anybody have any ideas.

SCCA is out the way I see it.

NASA is the only thing I think of right now I am waiting on a return call from them.

If it's a GM engine then you can run the car in NASA's 'Performance Touring' or 'Super Touring/Super Unlimited'. Depends on the power-to-weight ratio. Turbos ARE allowed, but any engine swaps have to be from the same corporate family (GM in this case). You are correct in that the car really can't be run in SCCA, with the possible exception of the 'SPO' class.
