Unhappy WTB 1.9 Head (Was broken baby need help)

Ive had my 70 opel gt for almost 2 years and when i bought it I didnt plan to drive it alot but fell in love with it. And started to drive it every day but now it has a cracked head It may be fixable but i would like to just replace it so i don't have to worry about it breaking again. Doe any one know where i can get one . Any help would be greatly appreciated I really want it back on the road.

I don't know, off hand, where you could get another head but I will give you advice that was given to me.
When you replace the head, make the modification to the head gasket to keep it from cracking again in the future.

Here is a link to the post that explains it all

Change the thread title to "Need a head in TN" or put out an ad in the wanted section.

I'm about 3 hours away from you. I might be able to find you one or two. I have two heads at the machine shop to be checked for cracks and could take another one tomorrow. The machine shop I use is in Nashville (1 hr. away) so I don't go often. I may have one that is ready to bolt on. It looks like it has been machined to me and a fresh valve job done with no miles on it. I might even be able to come up with a head gasket or two.

I'm in Mid. TN south of Nashville. PM me or email me: haroldc(at)united.net

Harold

There were two different 4 bearing heads available, early style and the later style with extra bolt holes in an attempt to improve sealing to the timing cover.

You might try Killer GT (TX) here on the forum as he appears to be trying to become a full time Opel parts supplier.

I thought it was only later (72-73) heads that had cracking problems?

I was going to buy a 70 or 71 to replace my 73, but if they all have cracking problems should I even bother?

Any head can crack, the newer ones are just supposed to be more prone to it. I just had an early model 4 bearing head checked that turned out to be cracked. The machine shop said that was the first Opel head he could remember seeing cracked. Back in the day he said he probably did 5 or 6 Opel heads a month between the various circle track guys that he did work for. I honestly don't think I would worry about it too much if I had a good late model head. Do the head gasket mod that RallyBob suggested and move on.

Sorry Jim, forgot about you. If you can beat the local TN price and my services here, I'll be impressed! TX is another story.

I have about 7 heads 30 miles away from you, but not really one ready to go on. Harold has some being checked at a machine shop already and its good to know if the head is good first. Don't for get to get a head gasket set, or at least the head gasket
