Sweet Kadett

.. and I found it stored in a shed less than 1 kilometre away from my workshop - Never ceases to amaze me how Opels lurk in dusty sheds ... and follow us home!

I don't blame you, if had one that nice I would keep it locked up too. I don't think that car was imported to the US and if it was I have never seen one. I have a soft spot for 1.1 SR Kadetts and Gt's. Light and 67 HP made for a good driver and with the Rallye option I would think it handled very much like the 1.1 GT.

Came from U.S.A. !!

My '67 Rallye was brought to NZ from over there in 1970 to race in local rallys by an American - he passed away while here and the wee Kadett stayed here - so I was told by the P.O.

However its chassis number is from before the 'start' number listed in the US Opel Parts books and has an 11SR engine number in the mid three thousands - making it a real early 11SR Rallye.

Still has quite low miles on the clock - 38,000 but stood for may years so the bores are a bit rusty. Another motor is on the way to being built though and I intend to get it back driving ... because it is so economical!

A K50 or T50 Toyota 5-speed g/box out of a 1980's Starlet is in its future too.

i searched for some information about them but my knowledge about the standard 4spd isnt enough to compare it to... is it an easy swap? or does it require a heap of adaptors?

K50/T50 Toyota 5-speed Gbox

Both these Toyota gboxes have very suitable ratios and are the smallest 5-speed RWD boxes Toyota made. The K50 was used in all 5-speed K-series Corollas and Starlets, 83 Carina and Celica. The later T50 in 82-83 Carina, Celica, 82 Corona up to 86 Corolla Levin.

K50 Ratios: 3.789 : 2.022 : 1.435 : 1.0 : 0.865

T50 Ratios: 3.587 : 2.022 : 1.384 : 1.0 : 0.861

Kadett 4sp: 3.867 : 2.215 : 1.432 : 1.0

The small overdrive ratio is just enough to be driven by the Kadett's motor and bring the 4.11 diff ratio effectively down to about 3.6:1 which would lower the revs at cruising speed quite nicely. Use of a 4.375:1 ratio diff from an auto 1.1L Kadett would be even nicer with an effective 3.78:1 ratio in 5th - but there are not many of those about!

Have not worked out the conversion parts needed yet - but it should be no more difficult than any other RWD gbox conversion.
Both gboxes have been used by Toyota behind up to 125hp motors - so strength should not be a concern.
