Hi All, I checked into this last year in Louisiana, and DMV told me I needed four things to get a title in LA. The first is a notorized bill of sale, second is to have the car vin and bill of sale verified by the State Police, third is to be a member of an antique car club (they didn't say what kind), and last there has to be no current registered owner. I was confused on this one and I asked again and they told me that the LA records only go back for 5 or 6 years so if there isn't anything in the records for any current registration they will issue a title in your name. You can get a copy of these procedures from DMV, they printed a copy of me when I asked. Let me know how it turns out. Lee |

Title
File a request for duplicate title with your state's Motor Vehicle registry, stating the facts and including copies of documents supporting your claims (like death certificates, copy of relevant wills or probate judgments, signed affidavit of witnesses, bill of sale, or whatever you have).
Including verification that the book value of the car is very low (possibly less than $1000 according to the "NADA" guide, which might be found with an online search), will also assist the paperwork. There are services available, that will do this for a fee (search online or in Hemmings), they do this in states where the process is much easier, (maybe in Georgia?) I had to do the same and after much running around and you need this and you need that I went to international title and for 130 bucks for each I was able to transfer title into my name...
You basically sell your car to the company and then they register it in Alabama and sell it back to you with the paperwork you need to transfer the title into new name. I did two of them have two more to go. HTH Lost car title and old car title or vehicle titles -International Title Service

What I'm trying to get at is, if LA does not require a title, only a bill of sale, then, the car can be registered. Here in GA, cars after 1977 do not require a title, just a Bill of Sale, with the date, VIN, and the sellers' and the buyer's signatures and you can get a tag.

Does your state provide for abandoned vehicles?
In Oregon, if you have a vehicle on your property for more than 30 days you can file as if it is an abandoned vehicle. There are forms specifically for this. The state then sends a notice to the last registered owner and gives them the option of doing something about the car. If the registered owner does nothing then after an additional 30 days you can file for title to the vehicle. This lets the state do the legwork. Alternately, you could sign the dead guys signature transferring title.....just kidding folks. That would be illegal. Seriously, don't do it.

thank you so much. i'll try that. i'm confused on the last owner. the orig owner died and his only daughter died but she sold it to a guy in mandeville before she died. he only had these two old registrations from like 69 or 71. he didn't have the title. i'm guessing i can get the guy that has all the possessions of the daughter to give me a bill of sale since he would be the last owner. if all i need is a bill of sale and old non current registration, that should work. now all i got to do is become a member of an antique car club. haha.

title work
In Texas I had to have the current registration from Alabama ( that is the proof of previous ownership) and notorized bill of sale with vin on it , you do not have to have VIN verified in texas they have a title thats not certified it's just a title and before you get plates the numbers have to be inspected but to just transfer the ownership they will wave the certification of the VIN and issue you title.
