the gear in the trans is basically palstic, could the center hole on it be worn? It's supposed to be a square hole to match the end of the speedo cable.

I would look at the gear as well. If it is fine, also look at the plastic gear teeth. If you think the speedo is worn out???? I have a couple of those depending on what number you have you can try

It does look like the hole may be larger than the end of the cable and if this is the case then I can see how cable will not turn.
Is this part easy to obtain and change? Does the tranny have to come out? And while we are at it............. I checked my transmission fluid today and remembered how you helped me out with the dipstick part last year. For some reason I do not think I actually paid you for that part and the shipping. If I did not please let me know and I will dispatch a M.O. to you on Monday. Thanks again Gene! |

opelspyder.....
I thought the problem was with the speedo that was in the car so I removed it and bench tested it and it worked okay but it did seem a bit 'jerky'. I had another speedo and this is the one I installed. You mentioned a number. Is this the number on the face that starts like W= The one I have in the car now has a different number than the one I removed. |

Yes, the "W" number is the number I was referring to. There are about 5 for the kadetts, and they vary by. A 1.1 will be different than a 1.9 and they will work, but may not be in proper calibration according to the gear in the trans. Those arecolor coded as well, but I do not know what gear color for what speedo. I know a Rallye could use the W-990 and 2 others. Being you have an auto, I'm not sure if any I have would be the same.In all of that mumbling, I hope you got that with the different speedo, you may be off on your mileage engine size and transmission

If you are having problems with your Speedo maybe you should start wearing swim trunks instead.

Yes, you can unscrew the cable, and you'll see theres a bar with a bolt, holding the gear in the trans. You should be able to pop the assembly out of trans. The 4-speed trans has the same assembly, so, you should be able to get/find one easy, if not, let me know, I have several of the auto trans that I can take the gear assembly out of.

off subject
A little off the beaten path, but if you have a 4-speed in an early Kadett up to 70, the speedo doesn't have the bar holding it, but rather a pin/set screw.

eBay Motors: OPEL GT MANTA KADETT SPEEDOMETER TRANS GEAR (item 330077037205 end time May-06-09 17:20:26 PDT)
I found this item on EBAY. Does this look like the proper item for a 70 Kadett 1.9 Automatic Transmission? |

Yes that's one that will work, but, I have several, one of which you can have. Just PM me your address and I'll get one in the mail to you on Saturday.

One more thing to consider is the little metal clip that holds the drive gear in place. When my speedometer didn't work I thought it was the plastic gear, but after taking the rear section of the auto trans apart, I saw that it was actually the clip that was broken off.

A special thanks to Gene Smith (BQS4) for sending me the solution to my speedometer problem.
The problem was the transmission gear module. The speedometer now works perfect and matches exactly with GPS speed information. Last edited by BQS4; 05-06-2009 at 07:47 AM. |

Are there different speedo gears for the Manta A/T? My speedo is way off and I wonder if is because of a speedo issue or a gear issue.

There are several different gears for the trans, both auto and manual. The ratios are color co-ordinated. The colors I have seen are blue, red, yellow, brown/white gears.
