Unanswered: Manta Ft gravel shield and battery hold down?
removed and lost at some point. Neither critical to the cars operation, but I like my cars complete if possible. After searching for prior discussion and finding none, two questions. 1.) Is the front stone/gravel shield that is removable for steering rack access the same on Asconas as on Mantas? 2.) Does anyone have a source for the battery hold down components? I don't recall what they consist of and can find no pictures in the manuals. A reasonable facsimile would be okay. I don't like the idea of the battery being free to vibrate. TIA. -Mark

Front Shield
You are talking about the belly pan that bolts to the front valance and goes back to the front crossmember. The Ascone one will not fit a Manta and there should be plenty laying around not being used, because it is APITA to get to the oil filter and take it off without pouring oil from the filter all over the inside of that shield, but it shouldn't rust out
The battery hold down is just a stamped steel bracket that catches the lower ridge of the battery and is secured by a 13mm headed bolt to the battery tray, between the battery and the inner fender.

You still have your battery hold down. It's in the pics you posted in your gallery. There's a single bolt in the box area, towards the heater side, that has a 13mm head. Take it out, as it's holding a small metal plate. "IF" you had an original type or the "correct" replacement type battery, that plate would fit into a notch in the side, at the bottom of the battery, and the bolt would go through the plate into a threaded hole and clamp the battery down. The Ascona skid plate WILL work on a Manta, it jus doesn't have the extended little wing tips the Manta has. I have two of these skid plates if you're interested. I can ship cheap too as it's my job. Just sent a stock 4-spd, minus the bell housing from GA to PA for $16.55.

If you make a parts run on those Mantas, would you mind checking on a couple of small parts for me?
Would like to find the steering column flasher button (small red one) and also need 2 seat back release knobs (just the black knob part- not the lever). If they're available I will be glad to pay! |

in that pic is a spare bolt I threaded into the hole with a washer on it to hold the loose insulation for the picture shoot. But I'm sure I can fabricate the clamp now that I know what it was. it's very similar to the one on my 1963 Tbird and I can buy one of those and shorten it a bit if needed. I PM'ed you about your Ascona gravel shields. -Mark

With a little trimming, this generic holddown works fine.
Bought it at Advance Auto. Now for the stone guard......
