Opel Manta 2.0 OHC Automat from Finland

Hi there all you opel fans!

I just stumbled here to this forum and thought I´d register. There are a lot of nice projects going on here, so I decided to put mine on display too.

I bought the car in the summer of 2005, when someone wanted to buy a gearstick to his Manta from me, I ended up buing the Manta from him. At first I just cruised around with it and tuned up the engine and made some minor modifications like moving the gas tank. Then a mysterious problem came with the carburators and I just couldn´t solve it (later i solved it, someone had drilled the idle nozzles i put in VERY big). So I ended up putting a L-Jetronic in it. It also had a mysterious problem (it turned out to be in the wiring) so I decided to do something else. At the same time my friend got in to an
accident when trying to avoid hitting a moose on the road, he ended up wrecking his Omega. Then we had a masterplan to put the engine and gearbox from his Omega to my Manta.

This is what the car looked like when I bought it:

First I took it a part, there were lots of corrosion to be repaired.

http://www.teammadmax.com/gallery/d/...2_2005+037.jpg

Then I made some reinsforcements to the body and chassis.
http://www.teammadmax.com/gallery/d/...2_2006+120.jpg

After that I started modifying the engine parts to fit Manta. The oil pan is modified from Kadett E.
http://www.teammadmax.com/gallery/d/...2_2006+132.jpg

I cut away a lot of the floor to make room for the new gearbox.
http://www.teammadmax.com/gallery/d/...3_2006+048.jpg

Then I made new engine and gearbox mounts.

http://www.teammadmax.com/gallery/d/...3_2006+083.jpg
http://www.teammadmax.com/gallery/d/...3_2006+085.jpg

After that I checked the engine. It was in good condition. I replaced the cylinder head and the camshaft from a 1.8 GSI Kadett E. And moved the distributor to the front.

http://www.teammadmax.com/gallery/d/...3_2006+066.jpg

Then I modified the handbrake lever and made a place for the gearshifter.

http://www.teammadmax.com/gallery/d/...3_2006+110.jpg

When those were done, it was time to build the propeller shaft. Since Omegas propeller shaft doesn´t have a "slide" (dont know what that is called) in it and the mounting to the gearbox is different (and lenght of course) I had to build the propeller shaft by combining Omegas and Mantas shafts.

http://www.teammadmax.com/gallery/d/...4_2006+046.jpg

Finally it was time to put some new sheet metal to the body.

http://www.teammadmax.com/gallery/d/...6_2006+012.jpg
http://www.teammadmax.com/gallery/d/...6_2006+005.jpg

The axles were cleaned and painted also.
http://www.teammadmax.com/gallery/d/...6_2006+001.jpg

Then it was time to begin working on the paint job.
http://www.teammadmax.com/gallery/d/...7_2006+014.jpg
http://www.teammadmax.com/gallery/d/...mantaa+003.jpg

First I painted the front with a different shade of purple.
http://www.teammadmax.com/gallery/d/...130806+001.jpg

Then I made som flames.
http://www.teammadmax.com/gallery/d/...+08+06+053.jpg

Then I painted the rest of the car with a different shade.
http://www.teammadmax.com/gallery/d/...130806+020.jpg
http://www.teammadmax.com/gallery/d/...130806+030.jpg

And made some highlights.
http://www.teammadmax.com/gallery/d/...jeejee+007.jpg

After the paint job was done, I re-mounted the engine and gearbox, made a new exhaust, re-mounted the interior, put in bigger brakes and my friend re-wired the whole car.

http://www.teammadmax.com/gallery/d/.../monni+016.jpg
http://www.teammadmax.com/gallery/d/...020906+003.jpg

And finally it was ready!

Nice to know there's a cool manta A in Finland. You did good work. What's the difference between the old engine and this OHC you build in? (i mean, its performance)

If you're referring to the car in the youtube video, they're ATS "Cup" wheels
