Unanswered: Bumpers
One goal is to get rid of big ugly bumbers. The front is probally going to be completly gone and the back we want to convert back to the smaller 70-73 bumber. I've searched and I read that some body work is needed but mostly in the front as the turn signals, holes, and the fender are alittle different. But that not a big deal as the front is going to be slightly customized . What is needed in the rear?? Just the 4 brackets and the bumber. Also have to relocate some lights and the plate but no biggie as that was planned anyways. Is there anything else for the rear. Thats all I could find besides others saying it was a bad idea (I am not worried about other cars as it wont be driven THAT much and will be I am very protective of my cars, the looks is well worth it, so please do not say don't do it). Now the biggest Q where/who has any parts I need to do this for sale??? Thanks for any help |

It is possible , but can not be done in a single day.
The big bumpers were designed to fulfill the "hard" Canadian and US Bumper requirements, required since MY 74. Btw, Canada will switch back to the European (ECE) requirements and I think the USA will follow soon. 35 years to late !! This requirement was one driver stopping the export of Opel Cars to NA/CDN ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Transport Canada issued a Canada Gazette Part II (Final Rule) on June 25, 2008, which modifies CMVSS 215 to allow passenger cars to be equipped with bumpers that comply to either, specified sections of ECE Regulation No. 42 - Uniform Provisions Concerning the Approval of Vehicles with regard to their Front and Rear Protective Devices, dated June 12, 2007 or the requirements as set out in title 49, part 581 of the Code of Federal Regulations of the United States as revised as of October 1, 2006. Beginning August 25, 2008 and until August 31, 2009, a passenger car may conform to either the old or the new requirements. As of September 1, 2009 passengers must comply to the new requirements. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- |

For the rear, you'll need protruding dimples in the rear quarter panels with holes to match up with the end bumper mounts. (You could probably fabricate something to replace the dimples pretty easily.) You'll need to find a way to replace the shock tube openings with mounts for center brackets, move the opel emblem from the trunk deck to the back panel and move the license plate to below the bumper. I don't see why you'd have to relocate any lights in the rear.
You could try Dr. Manta for original bumpers, but it's going to be expensive. I like skinny bumpers and know a lot of people have or want to do this. But I also like my big bumpers and the way they stretch and lower the lines of the car, not to mention protect it much better. To each his own however, good luck with your project. Jim
