Angry Help!! Bad Engine Noise!!

Hello All:

An engine noise has started in the 72 GT 1.9. Its a REALLY loud tick, not like the broken rod knock. It speeds up with rpm. I pulled the rocker cover and everything is OK up top, with a hose to my ear it seems to be coming from farther down, in the middle. Where do I start, and can I post this sound somewhere here for y'all to hear?

Thanks, Dan7

engine noise

Is the car a stick shift or automatic. If it is an automatic check and see if a torque converter bolt has backed out. When this occurs it ticks the back of the block and speeds up or slows down with the speed of the engine.

First Step

Check if there is any carbon on the pistontop - see this thread:

http://www.opelgt.com/forums/6a-engi...bon+piston+top

1.9 motors seem to do that a bit.

Thanks for the replies

It is a 4 speed. Is it possible that if the starter fails that it could be stuck? The starter starts it fine, though..

How many miles on the motor?
Was it over heated?
Did it happen over time or all of a sudden?

That is a very good point. I'd use a spray bottle so the water atomizes better to mix in with the gas. Another possiblility is a wrist pin slap starting. Go w/ the water first.

Help Bad Engine Noise

Hello Everyone:

Engine is a high miler (unknown) with low compression. Car has not been run in a good long while..several years, and then it has been going fine for a couple weeks, when at a stop lite today, on acceleration, it just started with the noise. Hope this helps.

I am going outside to get a sound sample to see if I can post it.

Thanks, Dan7

Agree with Old hippie, maybe a piston pin or rod bearings?
Change the oil and filter and see what you find, cut the filter open.
Add a thicker oil 20w-50 and see if the sound changes.
Run a compression check.
Do the simple things first.

Bad Engine Noise

Hello Everyone:

Thanks for all the suggestions. The water seemed to help. It actually changed the noise to more like what a badly sticking lifter would sound like in my Jeep.

Checked the plugs and they are carboned up bad. In the morning will change them out and have a better look inside thru the plug hole. Engine has not been overheated and oil pressure and temps are good.

Hopefully the .wav file of what this sounds like will be attached.

Thanks, Dan7

Sounds like sticking lifters. Get a quart of transmission oil, run the engine up to 3000 RPM or above, start pouring the transmission oil into the carb. Don't let it gag out, keep your RPMs up. Be ready for the smoke screen that will ensue. Do this outside so you can smoke out your neighbors. I had an engine that sounded the same and did the above proceedure and it fixed it. If that doesn't do it, it could be a collapsed lifter, but it runs too even. HTH, Jarrell

You can pour Tranny fluid down your carb without screwing it up? Looks like I learned something new today! Even though I would not dare try it no matter who told me it was ok haha!

Down the Throat!

You can slowly pour trany fluid, water ... or even Brasso .. down the carb on a running motor as long as not too much is poured in fast enough to choke it.
Brasso was used (by desperate mechanics!) on SV V8 Fords to 'seat' the rings if they were reluctant to stop oil burning.
There ANOTHER trade secret is out!

Will this cause any damage or excess wear on the lifters or seats? And do you need to follow it up with any other procedure, like an oil change or any other additive?

Engine Noise

If you are going to pour water down thru the carb. to clear carbon, made sure you heat the water before pouring it, otherwise you stand a chance of cracking a piston. Transmission fluid will restore compression while being poured and will clean the cyl. walls. Never used Brasso, but i have used a mixture of oil and Ajax to seat Chrome rings, back in the dark ages.
