    Saving A 1972 Opel Wagon

I have started the saving of an all original 1972 Opel Wagon Automatic with only 42,000 original miles! I will attempt to keep a log of what I am doing, with pictures, as to help others and maybe with your comments, help me!

Terry, my brother-in-law, came across this car in the mountains of NC where he lives. It was actually sitting in a open garage with the drivers side exposed to the elements. Needless to say, there was some rust issues but very fixable.

Here we are loading it onto my trailer with a wench and come-a-long. The rear drivers side brake was completely locked up so it had to be dragged onto the trailer.

Notice the interior door panel. Great condition!

    Fixing the drum brakes

In the next pictures, I had to end up cutting the rear drivers side drum off. Heat, beating it... nothing would cause it to budge. Once off, I could tell the brake shoes had seized to the drum. You can see the rebuild of the drum brake. I rebuilt the other side as well. Harold Collins supplied some brake parts for this!

    Body Work Started!

OK... Here we go! Terry and I are cutting out the rusted metal and welding in new metal. Terry is pretty good at this as he "hand" forms the metal pieces to replace the old metal. Needless to say, the guy is good.

Notice the place where there was a rusted hole near the battery box. It was all the way through to the inner fender. We had to take the outside front drivers side fender off anyway to replace due to damage. Gene Smith was kind enough to sell me a good replacement fender!

    Rear quarter panel rust

We decided to go after some of the worst rust next, which was behind the rear wheel on the drivers side. Once we got into it, it was a little worse than we thought. The inner fender lip was gone and had to be replaced.

Notice the hand forming on the metal that is replaced.

That is the only interior pic I have right now. I will have more later when I start cleaning the interior.

Yep... I have messed with the engine. The starter had to be replaced. I was able to turn the engine over after removing the plugs and squirting Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders and let it sit over night. It has good compression but would not fire off. No spark to the spark plugs. I have gotten a new set of points, plugs, condenser, rotor button and distributer cap. Hopefully, that will do the trick.

Row52.com shows they still have the 72 Opel Kadett wagon in their yard in Sherwood, Oregon. I was there last weekend looking for a part (that's no longer there) and they have cleared most of the row like they were going to crush it soon.
Anyhow, there's a lot of parts left on it, including that driver fender you seem to need.

I don't know if Pick-N-Pull still has parts pullers on site but it would be worth a call. If not then I could probably pull it for you if you want to pay for it and the shipping.

Thanks! But Gene Smith in Atlanta got one for me! Right now, as I work through the project, I will probably find stuff that I need.

Except for the 1.9 motor & trans, there's not a whole lot that the Kadett and Ascona (1900) Wagons share.

Jeff was clearly very impressed with how that "winch" was designed!
