Once you painted with the chrome paint, did you cover it with a black or gray coat? Thanks for the link for the chrome paint!

its unnecessary short term, perhaps necessary long term. Only benefit I could see is protecting base coat. I ended up ordering new lenses during sale.

Until they start reproducing them, I'm stuck with what I got. The paint rubs right off, so I'll probably go the mirror paint route.

    Thanks!

The later '73 lenses are the same as the Manta lenses. The bases are however specific to the model. The Manta one had studs with nuts that can be accessed through the trunk. The GT one attached with screws the same as the earlier bases.

I looked at my lenses last night, and I think I'm good with the split turn signal and brake light lenses, but my brake and reverse light lenses are rather faded. Harold, do you have any that are in good shape? What websites are out there that specialize in Mantas?

There are basically 3 parts suppliers:

Opel GT Source (OGTS) in California

    Opels Unlimited (OU) in California

    Opels USA/Opels Forever(OpelJim)

    and

    Splendid Parts in Germany.

That's really it. OGTS and Splendid are linked and share parts and parts development with each other, possibly OU is also part of the mix. Opels USA/Opels Forever is winding down his business and reducing his inventory, check the Ad Board for his stuff under OpelJim. Yeah, there are other parts suppliers scattered through Europe, but they generally specialize in the upgrade and performance stuff, and they cost a bit more due to the shipping and VAT taxes.

So that leaves you with OGTS and OU as your domestic suppliers, plus the used parts that some of us Opel lovers have salvaged over the years. There's almost nothing that you can find at your local auto parts store. Ebay is a great place to find parts and many of us search it every day looking for stuff.

Old lenses suck. They're almost 50 years old, brittle, and dull and have micro cracks. The new lenses that OGTS sells are bright and freshly made and you can get them in weird colors.

You could try chrome paint or gluing aluminum foil to your tail light reflectors, especially the reverse light. It works and lasts a long time. But, be a classy guy and just buy new ones. Nice shiny new lenses really make your car pop! Install some 45 LED light bulbs in them and astronauts will be able to see your tail lights from space!

Gordo, my GT is a late 1973. You can't buy new lenses from Gil or the guy in Germany. I have the manta lenses, Therefore I don't have the option to buy something new.

Nothing says you have to stay year specific with your restore. Original means nothing value-wise. If those multi-part Manta-style lenses are hard to get, I would suggest going with the monotone lenses that are much more plentiful and have more color options. Some guys put red lenses on all 4 rear lights, some go clear or smoked and use colored LEDs.

This is your chance to customize!

Thanks for advice, but I'm not interested in switching to lenses that don't belong on my '73. My whole reason for my being on the forum is to tap into your great minds and put my baby back on the road.

Need to start searching eBay. These NOS Manta lenses sold last month for $228.
Very hard to find complete, matching set of NOS OEM tail lamp lenses that fit 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974 & 1975 Opel Manta A models.
    These will also fit 1972 & 1973 Opel GT's.

Manta lens housings (chrome plastic) fit the GT.
Press the mounting studs out, and then use a sheet metal screw.
Used to own a 73 GT from 1983 to 1996.

I am not at work today where all my parts are stored. I may and I stress MAY have a decent set of the combo lenses that came off of my '73 GT that I can let you have. I have to go in tomorrow and if my old man brain does not let me down I will remember to look for them.

Thank you Jeff. I do have lenses right now that are functionally sound, but they are faded. I'm looking for some really nice replacements. Please let me know what you got, and we can work something out.

    Appreciate your looking,
    Dave

    Opel GT front lenses

What do you think a good price for NOS front lenses are for the GT?

I did call them yesterday afternoon, and they're going to look through their inventory and see what they have. Debbie is a great lady!

Todd is selling a pair of Hella lenses he claims as new, right now on Ebay for $99 plus shipping.

If they ARE NOS then that's a heck of a price.

It's Todd though, so caveat emptor.
