Many years ago I crafted tons of body parts out of glass. Fender flairs, front air dams, rear spoilers, and the like. My medium was polyurethane foam, hand carved, and then glassed over. I thought I was good. I know better now. Keep the pictures coming.

    Opel Engines

I have a couple of old 1900 engines if anyone is interested. Neither of them were high milers. I got them in the early seventies. They have been sitting for all this time.

After going through the pictures of John’s amazing project, I was eager to see that car personally and meet John.

It was very cold but clear weather yesterday, so I fired up my GT and drove to John’s place north of Toronto, about 2.5 hours drive from Goderich. Probably the last ride this season and I enjoyed drive as much as meeting John.

He is very nice person and his enthusiasm and workmanship are fantastic. The pictures of his project do not justify the real thing. Fiberglas body parts are difficult to distinguish from the original, except that they fit way better than Opel has ever done it. The gaps around doors, light pods and the engine hood are uniform and would meet the strictest criteria at any concourse show. I liked how the V8 engine fits without need for the hood scoop, maintaining clean GT lines. There is plethora of smartly designed solutions from the small components like hood latches to the sophisticated suspension design.

Way to go John! You became valuable member of Opel community.

    Thanks

Why thanks for the kind words there P.J.. It was nice to see a real opel in such nice shape as yours too. And I really like the rear window actuators you have installed on your ride, plus all the other mods. Shows a bit of that engineering coming through.

    This is amazing..

Have to ask.. OK other than the shape and the dash cluster what will actually be Opel

From the looks of it seems NOTHING not even the door frames are really Opel GT parts..

How structurally strong is the roof and doors ? Using factory door hardware and window regulators ?

Surprised you didn't just make it a convertible instead given the solid structure.

Can't wait to see in person.

    Structural strength.

The only things that are original opel parts are the glass and instrument panel, wiring, door hinges, light actuator cable and some hardware. The structure is fairly strong, plus with a tube roll cage combined into it, it is strong.

    Strength

Oh I forgot to mention the heater and fan. The perimeter of the doors, are a bit of a weak spot because of there thin profile and box structure. So to make these areas more rigid, I had to reinforce these areas with an aluminum strip front and back. It doesn't look to bad but there are always compromises when it comes to any custom build I suppose.

You're actually a real, normal looking, dude!

    Doors

Here are some pictures of the upper perimeter strengthening I added to the doors. Also a couple of window track shots. They are made from 1/8 inch thick aluminum. The free standing sections of the window tracks are also backed up with aluminum.

Yup, I'm just an ordinary looking guy there Gordo. Is that one of those big brained telepathic dudes from the old star trek. One of my favorite episodes.

I had to put the car up on jack stands to do some sanding on the bottoms of the rocker panels, so I took some pictures of the underside of the car. Plus some showing it raised up and lowered right down with the air bags.

This is just crazy.. but a good kind of crazy.

Why the complete doors as fiberglass ? Wouldnt it have been better to use the regular doors if your using all the hardware..?

Also given the greaqt strength the frame has and talent you have why not go convertible? You could make it look factory.

This is like Gordo with body and mechanical fabrication skills..

Just promise us no alligator skin vinyl roofs or something like that. ( Damn probably gave Gordo an idea.. )

My original doors were toast. Plus now I won't have any rust issues. As for alligator skin and such probably not, but Gordo's build is pretty awesome, and his meticulous postings of every detail of his car and more, are very enjoyable to read and watch. He sure is one who can think out of the box.
