With gas prices around 4 bucks a gallon in my area.
The progressive carb is looking sweet.
So lets play around some.. with the whole intake system.
Any thoughts are welcomed and encouraged!!
pictures ok heres mine.. wrench459/intake - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
I've got certain goals in mind. Bob I got the 1.18 bore on the secondary info. Thanks
One very big restriction at least on my part " it has to fit under a stock GT hood" but don't let that stop the other models from chiming in!

I found my old commentary and a pic of a bore-out venturi on a 32/36 Weber for. Wow...I can't believe that was back in 2002 already! Anyway, HTH.

Dan I have used a 1bbl. Ford Autolite carb. from a 240 six cyl. eng. to get good performance and fuel mileage. Made the carb adapter from a 1/4 alu. plate and bolted it to stock intake . HTH.

Dont laugh too hard about the the 1 bbl that thing had a massive bore.
Then it was feeding a 240 cid engine..not a 120 cid engine.
Nice info John. Thanks

Yea, us 'old-timers' love to modify stock parts.

Before I got all 'artsy' about my car parts, I actually used to throw things together pretty quickly just for the fun of it. One of the best running 'stock' Opels I ever drove was a friend's car.

I gave him all my leftovers. Pertronix, 2" custom exhaust with Dynomax mufflers, did a quickie ported intake, bored a 32/36 out on the secondary venturi, and threw on a Sprint exhaut manifold. For what it was, it went pretty damn well! No bling, just 4 hours of thrashing to get everything together, then out driving all night.

4 bucks a gallon!

You should feel lucky, its £5.45 pounds a gallon / £1.20 litre in the UK.

I know our gallons are different to yours (1 UK Gallon = 4.54 Litres), but still that equates to $10.78

The lorry drives blockaded London yesterday, the sh!t is really hitting the fan over hear.

. . . a bit of a sidebar for a moment and just thinking outloud, Bob, did you ever see or try the 32/35 Solex DIDTA-4 that came on the '66-'71 Commodore 'A' 2.5S CIH-6 engine (not the 2.5HL of the GS) on a 1.9? . . . open up the stock intake manifold secondary a bit and you'd be good to go with all stock parts!

Had I known sooner, sure would've tried it at some point . . . talk about your "complete stock" sleeper! . . . HMMM!

Comparing your gas price in USD to our gas price is like comparing apples to oranges. Consider Germany which is paying about $8/gallon for unleaded gasoline the last I heard. Just because our gas isn't $8/gal doesn't make the effect on our economy from the price doubling in the last 4 years any less real. Germany's economy, just like the UK, is very different from the United States. The average wage in Germany (after taxes) is twice what it is here. It's the same with your country. Also the United States is very much dependant on our shipping industry to move goods. California alone is larger than your entire country.

Nope. But back in the day we tried to locate a twin 40 mm downdraft Solex, same bolt pattern as stock. Guess it was popular in the late '70's and early '80's for Opel racers. I remember talking to Tim Meehan about them (Mantapart owner), and he couldn't remember the OE application. May have been Mercedes or BMW?

We would have loved to use that carb with our earliest circle track cars, those were truly 'stock appearing'. Instead we ended up modding the HECK out of a stock mechanical secondary Opel GT Solex. No choke, installed secondary venturi into the primary side as well, honed them both out 1 mm oversize....etc. Webers were strictly verboten per the rules.

Was that a sychronous or progressive carb? . . . perhaps for a Porsche 912, entry level, boxer four? . . . maybe the even earlier Porsche 356, also with a boxer four?

Sandspur wanted to go to a car show today. (something about its her son's store)so I had to put the carb. together quickly last night with the suggested mods. Your right Rallybob it kicks in hard around the 4 grand mark. I believe I'm close to a base setup.

Different sound altogether, right? It's a neat way to get more airflow without buying another carburetor. Pretty stealthy too...

Don't know, never actually got my hands on one....

Just heard rumors about them from various sources.
After searching a bit further . . . turns out it was not a twin-40 Solex downdraft after all, but a twin-38 synch downdraft from the '75-'78 German Ford 2.8 V-6s, a 38EEIT type! . . . has the same bolt pattern, an oval raised edge for stock filter/snorkel use and even the accelerator linkage hooks up properly - outside barrel when mounted!

I wonder . . . can't remember, actually . . . did the "Taunus-based" Capris offer those V-6 engines here too? Anyway, to paraphrase Arte Johnson of "Laugh-In" fame, "VERRRY INTERRRESTING!"

Discovered a great site for old-timer carbs, pumps, etc. . . . in Berlin, naturally, but site is in German, English and French!

Minor Setback

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

After some milling ,boring, jetting, and blending of the carb. a setback.
Went out for a test run tonight y'all know the type..alone clear roads.. sunset
with cooler temps.
First gear revvvved nice
What the hell grabbed second but instead of the tire breaking loose it hooked.
BAMM BOOM VROOOOOM @!*% there went second gear.
Only gear I got now is fourth and it don't sound good at all, even lost reverse.
Glad I've got a spare tranny sitting on the garage floor.
So close to getting some air flow numbers.

But the old girl brought me back home..limping badly. Its hell pulling off from a stop in high gear with a long duration cam car.
