Unanswered: Octane Boosters

I've got this nagging little ping at 2500 rpms.
Back ground info
dist plate(points) locked down.
Initial 16 degrees total 32 degrees @ 3500 rpms
I realize that I wont be happy until I can custom map the ignition curve.
So whats the best way to bump up pump fuel (93) to a slower burn?

Add Lead!

5% Av Gas or leaded Racing fuel should (illegally) do the job ....

The other options are to slightly lower compression ratio, fit a cam with slightly longer duration (i.e. later intake valve closing) or slightly retard the cam you have to achieve the same later intake valve closing.

OR - set initial ignition advance to a degree or two less.

Torco octane booster works extremely well on turbo cars running high boost, so you should be able to get away with adding 'just a dash' of it to your Opel. Apparently a full 32oz bottle of Torco octane booster raises 5 gallons of 93 octane gas to 107 octane. So it won't take much to get to 95-96 octane or thereabouts.

Another option is to install stiffer mechanical advance springs and/or lighten the advance weights (drill holes) to slow the advance onset a bit. Same initial advance and total advance...but having 3-5 fewer degrees @ 2500 rpms would probably do the trick.

Or you can try to get colder air to the engine, and/or insulate the induction side a bit better than stock.

Or as Jim says...reduce cylinder pressures via any of these methods: lower compression ratio / more overlap / retarded cam timing.

just thinking about something cheap & permanent...
gas is expensive enough nowadays without additives!

Thanks guys for your input.
But lowering the C/R is out of the question.
I guess its time for me to come clean.
At first all I wanted was alittle more oumph from a 2.0.
Then we found out that the ford valves where a better choice over the chevys. Gearheads you've got to love them.
So lets get back to the engine.
Crank was out by 3 grams got it under 2 grams without heavy metal.
Rods forged with new stock bolts where lightened(hint go with the sportsman rods Ford 2.0-2.3s) cleaned up all the castings polished the beams.
Balanced the rods bigend first then the total rod to under a .1 of a gram.
Dang I hated to shotping those rods they where so pretty.
ooh I got off subject again.
Jim I got a supply of AV fuel lined up today low lead 100.
Torco never heard of them before Bob but if I can get it I'll try it.

Evidently it's a BIG brand out west. I'd never heard of it until a trip to the Salt Flats back in the early 90's. It seemed to be the dominate brand out there.

Have you considered a small water injection system? I know there are companies out there that sell kits that will fit to just about any vehicle in the $200 range or you could make one on your own. They aren't real complex. Water sure is a lot cheaper than any gasoline additives these days O_o

Thanks Bob I'm also going to try the lucas from the reports from the volvo comparisons of octane boosters.

Careful Gene theres red clay all around Ga. just like northern Fla.
I cant help it if you live on a ROCK

Gumby I'm working on a alky injection system to cool the cambers temps down.
I've got half of the parts together. But without a stronger tranny I'm dead in the water. The Getrag is ordered...
