Unanswered: power

hey could anybody inform me of the potential power output from the 1.9l engine in GT through porting, boring etc?
also with the above modifications what would it become with a supercharger added?
cheers

The bigger question is how big is your pocket book? 200+ hp is not out of the question with 12 - 14psi of boost.

how big does it need to be?
i want to have big power if the cost is necessary then so be it!
i believe the super charger is the same as the new mini cooper "s" they are easy to pick up of ebay over here
with more power though im guessin that i would need to make upgrades to breaks & suspension etc but that can be arranged.

200 HP will very quickly show you where the weak links are in the 1.9 drive train, or I can just tell you tell you from experence ALL OF IT. Clutch, transmission, torque tube propeller shaft barrel spline, ring gear and pinion and axles will not live long with that kinda power if you call on it on a regular basis. I have broken all those items with 175-180HP so just be prepared to improve those things along with the engine

My GT has a narrowed big 10 bolt GM rearend, a V6 S-10 T5 transmission, and a S-10 Clutch that is behind a 2.2 CIH with a big valve head (1.84 intakes/1.5 exhaust) 255 V8 Ford pistons, warm Hyd. cam and a Cannon intake with a 350cfm Holley carb. and tube exhaust header with 2 1/4 exhaust system. This motor is very drivable and puts out 165 HP at the flywheel, the only problem I have with the drivetrain is checking lube to make sure it's full and I drive the car "spirited" but I'm on this side of the pond and those are the parts that are most available at a whole lot less cost that buying specilized Opel parts from Europe (example: I have less than $450 in the rear including machine work and it has a posi-traction and disc brakes)

Your Side of the 'Pond'

Welcome to this site, Danny.

There are heaps more parts for Opel Cam-In-Head motors on your side of the Atlantic - they were used in 1979-87 Opel Mantas and Vauxhall Cavaliers (2.0 litre size: 95mm X 69.8mm)) and 1984-87ish Vauxhall Carltons (2.2 litre size: 95mm X 77.5mm) plus other Opel and Vauxhall models of that era.

Take a look here:
Project Web -- 2002 Engine
to see what can be done with a basic 2.0L Manta block! They were and still are used extensively in Rallying and Classic road racing/hill climbing etc. in the UK.

Don't worry about 'maximum' power - the GT responds well to a crisp motor with 125/150 hp and the Manta 5-speed Getrag gearbox. Greater power requires all sorts of drive train upgrades and expense.

Like others have said, getting the power out of the engine isn't an issue. Forced induction is certainly cheaper than expensive head work and suspension/brake upgrades are highly recommended even if you have a stock engine!

You'll need to determine how you plan to drive the car. If you like hard launches and WOT then you'll need to upgrade the clutch, transmission, torque tube, and rearend. I personally plan to use the stock rearend and torque tube but that is because I don't do hard launches and my GT isn't a racecar to me.

Im wanting one for a weekend car and somat that i can use in nice weather or if i go away on holiday. I would want to thrash it! Got all that out of me system in me other car.
i would just like to have power when i want it, i was thinking about putting a 2.0L red top engine out of a vauxhall we have over here should be around 130BHP or like GTJIM has said 2.0L out of a manta.
id be able to get the parts more easily as far as engine, gearbox etc
i know that the car is pretty small are they light? in terms of power to weight?

About 950-960 kilos. So they move out quite nicely with 125-150 bhp!
