Unanswered: forged pistons and connecting rods

Hello community!
This is Joerg Waltemathe from Germany asking you all.
we are involved in historic motorsport with the Opel CIH and Chevy SB engines.
We are looking out for high quality Forged pistons and rods for the 2,0 (3,0)CIH engine and the 2,4 (3,6)CIH engine.
Caused by the low availability of "original plug and play" parts , we´re looking for conversion kits from chevy or Ford, or something else.
I´ve got the info from "Hiro", I´ll get perfekt info´s here in this community.
So tell me, which parts you are using, or give me the link for a thread in this community (may be, I´m using the "search-function "wrong).
I´ll be glad for all informations.
regards Joerg

Hi Jürg,
Glad to meet you here!
Is your race regulation restrictive about engine components?
I mean does it happen after a race that some engines are dismanteled to check they fit the race regulation?
MfG,
Hiro

Hi Hiro,
yes, nice to meet you!!
We can use all available parts in the group 2 regulations. We only don´t have to overstep the dispacement. So we can use Ford, Toyota or any else Parts. The bore shouldn´t be over 96,5mm.
Regards Jörg

this group2 regulation is very good!
for the 2.0/3.0 our US friends here know lots of rod/piston setup,
for the 2.4/3.6 it's another story because we all struggle with the bad rod ratio...
all best,
Hiro

Welcome to the site Joerg.
As far as I know theres no drop-in piston/rod kits. Theres several aftermarket rods(non Opel) available after some machine work that will work. But they'll require custom made pistons.
I'm looking into a honda 1.8 rod thats looks to be very light. Or was it a 1.6 rod? left my notes at work. 1.9-2.0 CIH the rest no clue.

Dan, if you would, please post all the Honda rod info in the thread called "Con Rod FAQs". I'd like to see it, as I'm contemplating building an Outlaw motor. Not gonna start on it till I figure out what to do for rocker arms, but I'd enjoy checking out other rod possibilities meanwhile!
Thanks!

Welcome Joerg. Lots you can do with Ford/Chevy/Toyota/Mitsubishi connecting rods. As Hiro has said it depends on your regulations to some extent.

Most pistons will need to be custom, but even still they are very cheap here compared to Europe. Especially cheap now that our dollar is so weak compared to the Euro!

I hope to deal with your company some day soon as well, I have a need for your lightweight aluminium tappets for some of my projects.

Regards,
Bob

No hurry! My Outlaw motor needs to be running and the car transported to Spokane by tomorrow afternoon.
Guess we're not gonna make it this year. But there's always next year!

Hey this might be a good time to share something I discovered last month. While waiting for my pickup to be serviced I found something laying on the service manager's desk that looked interesting. A Northstar piston/rod combo. I asked if I could borrow it. No problem. I took it home and disassembled it easily (full floating pin) and measured it up here and there. Found the "Mahle" trademark in the piston.
Rod won't work. Very lengthy and huge big end. Piston, however, could go in the 1.9, if the rod was the right length or stroke increased, and it has four small valve reliefs. Pin is kind of big, but it's way up high and the ring grooves are high and small. Had I a sixteen valve head to play with I might have more to write about.
Just a thought. Kind of tantalizing, when you think about ultra Opel performance, and Outlaw rules, and no such thing as optimum CIH valvetrain parts!

Here is a setup that fits your regulation Jörg:

with Ford Pinto 2.3 rods (50.8mm & c-c 132.2mm)
and Chevy SB305 pistons (oversize 96.42mm & cd 39.62mm)
std 69.8mm stroke 3.0 crankshaft
96.42x69.8 = 3058cc
rod ratio = 1.90
required comp height = 40.9mm (sb305 compatible)

needs to skim block (1.28mm)
needs crank work to fit Pinto rods
no big rod work (Chevy pin 23.55mm vs Ford bushing 23.17mm)

I found my Pinto forged rods from AMS Racing on Ebay usa,
My SB305 forged pistons are from JE ordered through Dave Powell in UK.

Hello,
thank you for all the informations. Ok, a drop in set is not necessary.Machinework should not be a problem for us. (ok, as little as possible). We are interestet to buy all parts (rods, bearings, pistons, pins and rings) with specifications as close as possible to original opel. We are able to build our own H-beam rods, but it is a high-price solution for customers. If there is a conversion available, that would be very helpfull.
Are dome-pistons available?
@pete: are you a dealer of those parts? Or can anybody else make an invoice?

@Bob: you will be more than welcome. We heared a lot of you here on the sites in germany. Yes, it´s very nice to buy from the states at the moment, to export is a little difficult.
regards Jörg

by the way, can you read the "Ö" in my name, or have I to write Joerg?

no i am not a part shop. JE pistons make my racing pistons. they can make
anything you want for good price. My last set of pistons for the opel was $480 and for my vw 11:1 was $380 plus shipping. I did try Venolia pistons and i did not like them.
you can e-mail them for a price.
