Unanswered: Your opinion on this big valve head

Hello !

Yesterday I went to pick up a 2.2 crank for my future Hiro-style
race engine.
Well there the guy had a lot of greasy stuff lying around.
The crank was sitting in a dirty short block, so I inspected a main and
rod bearing suffice. It looked OK, and I got it and a flywheel, a 2.2 cam cover plus some small stuff for $50 !

Then he showed me an old big valve head that he would sell to me.
It was also full of dirty oil and.....you know. I said that I would like to
take it home for some inspection. So now I have cleaned it a bit and
taken the cam and valves out. The cam is gone, three of the lobes
is worn down, maybe because missing the oil rising tube in the head.

Now it would be nice if you will look at the (bad) pictures and let me
know if its worth spending time and money on.
I think its a 1.9-2.0 head, the surface height is 101mm (3.976")
intake valve ~47.8mm. (1.88") exhaust ~40.7mm (1.60")
The intake port is ~42x35mm, and exhaust ~39x29mm.

What do you think of the port job.....is it worth spending some $$ on
or.....?

Hard to say. It *looks* like a 2.0 head judging by the combustion chamber. It has certainly been very heavily ported, that I can tell you! The valve size proportion looks correct (2.0 has worse exhaust ports than 1.9, so it needs bigger exhaust valves).

Without knowing airflow, I couldn't comment on how well the porting was done. But if it was done correctly, it probably flows a bit more than a standard 2.2 inlet port, and should outflow a standard 2.4 exhaust port by quite a bit. I prepared a 2.0 head with the exact same valve sizes, but with smaller ports, and produced 214 hp (@ crankshaft) with a 2.2 block and 45 DCOE Webers. So this gives you an idea of the potential maybe....

HTH,
Bob

Either get new aluminium retainers or upgrade them to Ti or lightweight cro-mo steel. Aluminium tends to have a short working life, we used to replace them once per year or the valve locks would pull through them! In the end, titanium is much cheaper.

I of course agree with my teacher Bob!
porting job looks quite extreme so I would check the runner volumes if a flowbench is not available,
I would also add a little bit more work in the chambers to unshroud this big inlet valve properly,
also some more work in the valve bowls to get rid of remaining machining steps but this is my personal taste.
my first reaction was "this head will need a big displacement short block to breath properly",
but this will also depend upon the camshaft & intake system.
I would personally buy it if price is OK & test it on one of my 2.5 as a comparison basis,
but basically this is because I only know the 2.4/2.5!

Don't forget to get the cylinder head magna-fluxed, (to inspect for cracks) before you spend $$.

The head looks like a good start but the crank is junk. Just bring the crank over to Montana and I'll see to it that it gets recycled properly...

Hey, I had to try.

But seriously, when you see a nice porting job it just makes you go ""wow". This one doesn't quite do that, but maybe saved you at least half the time.

Fifty bucks for a 2.2 crank, huh? That's it; I'm moving to Sweden. They have good beer there, right?

If you can have it pressure tested for cracks rather than magnafluxed.
