It has been 24 here at night, and barely pushing 50 during the day. By 4PM the temp is dropping again. Luckily theres been no precipitation.

Have you dyno'd the car yet? I'm also wondering if you used the stock rear end?

It costs at least $600 to dyno a car out here, so that's not happening.

Yes, for now the rear end is stock, or at least till I grenade it.

Let's go back to basics on what the colored smoke signifies. Blue smoke = oil, Black smoke = fuel, white smoke = coolant. If you have blue smoke it's normally oil getting into the combustion chamber via the rings, valve guides or seals. HTH.

I came across these forged pistons in the JE catalog,
Are they the one you guys use for Bob's 2.4 stroker?

I used cast low compression ones. But Those look like they will work for the hi-comp build.

Hiro, I used the forged TRW pistons for my first stroker engine. The cast pistons cost me $8 each with pins, the forged TRW ones were 'much' more expensive, $32 each ten years ago!

Unbeatable price!
I'm wondering how much are these JE 305 forged pistons nowadays,
Apparently it's $ 87 each now,
Could be a nice alternative for my race CIH6 with std stroke & 24E rods or even Pinto rods...
BTW I had on Ebay supposedly JE pistons but showing a TRW cast label,
Is this the same company now?

Six hundred to dyno a car? You gotta be kidding.
A few years ago my friend and I were kicking around the idea of buying or leasing a Mustang Dyno to put in another friend's Speed and Performance shop. We asked around at the racetrack, and at the local hot rod clubs if anyone might be interested in using it if we got it. Of course the first question asked by every person was "well how much will it cost to use?"
We figured for a hundred you could play on it for an hour. Hours after the first would be fifty per.
There were a few people who said "great, no problem, do it please." The other ninety nine percent said "no way."
I said "never mind" and went three hundred grand in debt on a party business instead...
So what would you get for $600 at a dyno session? I'm quite curious!

No Opels were harmed in the filming of this movie.
However two Mustangs, a Pinto, and a Capri were hospitalized.
One Mustang was euthanized the next morning.

Yeah, Jeff, I was gonna comment on that also. During the Coronado Classic Car Races last year and the year previous, one of the local speed tuning and dyno shops brought out a portable dyno system. It cost $40 a run. Gary Ruhle and Paul Heebink both ran their cars this last year, the results are in the photo gallery. I asked what it would cost, at the shop to dial in Willit? and IIRC he said about $80 an hour. Most of the time would be spent making sure the engine would survive the extended dyno runs. With the portable unit at the races, the owner could specify max RPM, for that reason. In the past two years only one car had to be towed away, after the run. Oh yeah, you have to sign a release prior to the portable dyno runs, the shop disclaims any liability during the runs.

$600 gets you 2 hours of dyno time and limited jetting work. Hey its CA everything is over priced. Thats why its not done. Looks like I'll be making a run to CO, eh? My brother and sister in-law are pastors in Aurora, CO anyways.

"Hey honey, you want to visit your sister? Oh, by the way we will need to rent a trailer so I can bring some engines though."

Ya, right!

Update time.

The car runs strong, I'll be building one of these again for sure. Now if I could just get it tuned perfect. Here are picks of my spark plugs, any observations? Ideas?

# 1 & 2 seem to be getting oil on them, look like the plugs on a 2 stroke engine, only thing I can think of is, oil leaking by the piston rings, or a leaking head gasket [jmtcw]

I don't like the looks of any of them, Chris. But I don't have any experience with an odd plug like those, I've never used anything but the regular single ground strap type.

hum...
all 4 look quite oily to me,
that's your blue smoke btw,
rings or valve stem seals maybe?
Hiro
edit: you have gapless 2nd ring so ring is not the problem.

Chris, how many miles do you have on the engine now? It could be, all the rings haven't seated yet. 3 & 4 have less crud build up up than 1 & 2. It does look like a combo of being a tad rich and oil blowby on the plugs. Try a set of normal plugs, a step higher in the heat range than recommended and see how it goes for 50-100 miles, then pull them and check them out again for color.

I just put in some Denso U grooves. The engine has 2000-2500 on it right now. Do TotalSeal ring take this long to seat?

What kind of motor oil are you using? If you are running synthetic the engine can't break in cause it's too slippery. Hard hard have you driven it so far?
