1.9 turbo talk

just wanted to post and see what you guys think and or have done with a turbo and a 1.9,,,not wanting to get some crazy 400 hp........... just running 7-9 lbs. of boost,,,can the 4-speed handle it? i know a better clutch is needed,,,and to to get the cam right so it don't lag...the rear end is being changed for the added hp....me and a friend has done some cool stuff with turbos and aircooled vw's,,,,,have not ran a 1.9 hard or built one yeat......but soon to learn,,,,.....the turbos we have are new and not rebuilt.....mostly wanting to know if the bottem end of the motor can handle it?

the turbo is from mazda,,,the same as in the newer miata,,,posting a pic of one on a vw,,,,i have the block(1.9) at the mech. shop right now and we are puting the intake and the exhaust manafolds toghether,,,will post pics of them when thay are together,,,,

thats cool. if you just want a bolt on,,,i think half the fun is building it,,,if i blow the motor,,,and i have blown stuff up before,,i'll rethink it and get it right next time,,,,,this is my first gt project,,,done the v-8 thing(chevy),the v-6(ford) thing,,,but keep coming back the 4 cyl(all), and i think the gt is a great platform to do it ,,,

so u are goin to use the 1.8L Miata engine right? could u give me some more information about everything that u are goin to have to do for everything to work.

I have never spoken to the people of TGSI, but I wonder if they have a working prototype of that turbo on a GT. The picture that they have of it is probobly not for a gt, or 1.9 block for that matter. I found a picture of a 1.9L block with a turbo, it is from a racing gt from the 70's

will the turbo add great power increase? do u think there is a way to hook up a front mount intercooler on the gt?

I would guess about 30-40% increase in power on a well built motor. As far as an intercooler you can do whatever you want, your just going to have to fabricate everything yourself. Check ebay there are tons of intercoolers on there, you would just need to mount it and run tubes for it.

So I assume that you will be using a 75 FI intake manifold, what sort of fuel management system will you be using? Or maybe I should say what sort of fuel injection computer?

whatever happened to your grm 2004 dollar challenge bob hust curious to know
and a blow through carb setup is easy if you have a good sealed carb whether ina box or not but the challenge is to keep fuel to it and the way you do that is by using a boost referenced fuel pressure regulator from aeromotive you dial in your intial fuel pressure without boost and for every pound of boost you get 1 pound more of fuel pressure i am going this route on a 12a rotary for a toyota corrola it cheap and easy and reliable
i would just recomend a holley 500cfm carb for its adjustability

Just a couple of thoughts on the turbo issue, mine was a draw through with a 45 dcoe where the stock air cleaner was. I had constant problems with spark. I finally went to the biggest mallory coil I could buy because on boost nothing else would fire. Then I had to machine out the middle of the distributor rotors and braze in a bigger connection center to end, to get the spark to the plugs after I melted a few down on boost. I also replaced bosch platinums every six months. It ran 10 pounds of boost. 7.5 to 1 pistons, petronics, sprint exhaust and a modified stock intake. It had a stock 4 speed but a very modified rear end 3rd gear 4000 rpm was 75 mph, minimum speed in 4th was 90 to keep the engine lit. I got the car after the wastegate stuck at bandimere for the PO. I had the idea it was a street car and made it into one.

well i have never gotten into detail on how a turbo works on a carburated car. i wus looking at the pic of that turboed manta 1.9 and i noticed u need to inclose the carb in a box which i dont htink would be to hard to do with a weber 32/36 to make a nice air tight incloser box. but then i loked at the turbo and it looks easy enought to design some sort of setup to make that fit in the stock gt engine bay but iw us looking at the pic for the manta turbo theres a long pipe coming off the turbo and has sort of a flange at the end what is that?????

That appears to be the exhaust from the turbo, odd looking though. That goes to what was your collector. On a GT that would bend down over the passenger motor mount and down. You have to remember that a Manta has alot of room in the engine compartment, in the GT you are more limited for space.

I think the car for turboing would be the sport wagon, neat little car it would make the perfect sleeper. Needs to be the one with the fake wood sides and at least 1 car seat in the back, and 200 horses under the hood.
