Yep-A-Reno
2nd Saturday in May, 2015.
Placerville, CA south through historical Gold Rush country to the mecca of Opel enthusiasts around the world; Opel GT Source!!!
New Parts. Old parts. Mature Opels. Old & young Opel Drivers. By gads, we've even had some pretty women show up one year. (but, truth be known - it's mostly us old guys)
The goal this year is to get GT Roy up here from Arizona; and not only with his Opel Tee right-side-out, but also in the correct front/back configuration.
Not all of the details are available - so suggested routes or short side-excursions can be entertained at this point.
I have a friend that manages a winery in Placerville area. Never been there, but my guess is he would be open to something.
Real question for me, no mention of the newer design. Will they be welcome. I understand the old rule, I restored 1955-56 Crown Vickys and 55-57 Chevys. But would love to take part.
Well Keith, that sounds like a challenge !
First; to get Zooms Just Fine 800 miles to the Bay Area, that's easy.
More difficult; to dress properly for these prestigious events.
I need a personal assistant, ladies have interviewed, but think I'm a lost cause !
You were at Sears point for a Tinyvette LeMons race when I showed up
in house slippers, I only noticed that when I stepped in a rain puddle.
Must turn on lights, put on glasses, have coffee, and look in mirror before leaving home.
Roy, I'd really like you to attend. You add a lot to the mix. If there's no female readily available to give you a once-over before the drive I'll find one at Starbucks to perform such task.
The GT is about two weeks from completion. After 12 years it should be. It would be a lot of fun to join your ride. Since I live in Fallon Nevada, it won't be too far, so I am planning to join you.
I plan on joining the fun run if can get that weekend off work. Now that I have 2 running Opels the dilemma will be which one to take. I guess I could fit more parts in the Manta if I decide to go on a shopping spree at OGTS:haha:
Bob - whether your car is complete, or mostly complete, just be there. If it runs, its done enough. Besides, after 12 years, isn't this it's cotillion?
Mike, - What???? You're going to let this pass by without the annual spring showing of the TinyVette? Get'er'done already.
Anybody - make sure to get messages to Alan, Tod, Alec, Neil, and Igor.
Did not want to crash the party, thank you for the clarification.
Just realized the date, we have a major run that same day. Chase the Sun from Brawley to Dana Point. The wife has already said she did not want to ride that far and that long in the car. Friends in Placerville, so this just may work out.
I will start making arrangements for someone to stay with my wife that day. I need to drop a battery in the GT. I'm out of town this coming week but should be able to do it the week after.
Hi ya Keith,
Going to try to make it this year. The front suspension
is currently off the wagon for gusseting and re-bushing
but do have other means of transport. Pencil me in,
although it will be in a Hyundai more than likely. It will
be good to catch up with everybody. See you then.
Don.
All, do please make sure to join in this scenic drive through the historic Gold Rush foothills. I'm hoping the green hills and orchard blossoms will persist until then. But without at least another storm between now and the drive, we'll be enjoying the golden hills. But hey, the road is still the road: like a fine woman; curvy, smooth, and lots of elevation change.
All youse Southern California and Arizona drivers - make this a preview of next August's OMC gathering and join us this day. Drive the backside of the Sierra (395) and take one of two amazing passes over to Opel GT Source. (Make sure your GT brakes are up to snuff)
Don't forget this is a pot-luck deal. Bring food; prepared at home or store-bought.
But most importantly - just be there.
Let's meet once more at Starbucks and plan to leave by 9:00 sharp. So get there early, have your coffee & pastry, and please be fueled up, ready to leave. We'll shoot to arrive at Opel GT Source by noon-thirty.

Get your orders for Opel parts & upgrades in early so Gil doesn't have to dig them out during the lunch.
Planning on coming but I have to get the car running first. I put in a new battery then found the voltage regulator was shot. Replaced that now, the starter is not working. I have to clean up a replacement starter and install it then do the annual maintenance. I should be ready by Fun Day.
I can bring some potato salad or bake some hamburger buns.
I plan on going, but not sure if I can get the GT ready by then. The machine shop's already started their work, once the engine's in I want to make sure all the kinks are worked out before I drive to Sonora, don't want to break down again.
If my car's not drivable about a week before the fun run, can I hitch a ride with someone?
Neil's gonna be working on the 9th, so I can't go with him.
I'm gonna see if Ken and his newly-purchased Manta can make it, if so, I'll probably ride with him. I really wanna go this year, partly because it's awesome and partly because I need a bunch of used interior parts.
How about a side dish or desert? Enough for approx 10 people. They'll probably be more than ten, but then, everyone should be bringing food too.
With a side dish or desert, you can go with store-bought if it makes it easier and more convenient for you; plus it's already in a serving container.
On the other hand, perhaps you'd care to let us sample a traditional Russian dish (don't know where you'd find something like that !!). If it needs reheated, check with Gil as his oven might otherwise be engaged with someone else's dish.
Or, bring a girl in a non-Opel car for an exciting ride, and let her know her contribution is a side dish or desert.
We're coming up on the drive; a week from this Saturday.
Terry, how about establishing the route? You're the most knowledgeable of the local roads. (not sure if Don's in this year or not)
Don't forget,
Leaving Starbucks at 9:00 sharp. So get there early, have your coffee & pastry, and please be fueled up, ready to leave. We'll shoot to arrive at Opel GT Source by noon-thirty.

And, as always on road trips, BAIL IS A LOAN, NOT A GIFT!
There is a problem with the route for next weeks fun run. It coincides with the parade in down town Sonora. You will have to detour and take either Rawhide road to Jamestown off the 49 or Jamestown Rd. to Jamestown off the 49 as well. If you get to the traffic signal in Columbia you have gone too far and will need to turn around.
I think that parade was held a couple years ago on the day we did this run, but I think ,most of it was over by the time we got there. Well, by the time I got there.
I'll work on route map this weekend. I am taking tomorrow off to see if I can get the GT running. I swapped out the starter last weekend but it still would not engage. I'll try another starter tomorrow. Electrically everything checks out. There is power to the solenoid, it clicks but the starter won't turn. Ground is good from the engine to the battery. So I do not know what is wrong.
As for routes, we can go over Salmon Falls Road through El Dorado Hill which we have not done for a couple of years, we can take the straighter more direct route past my place on Lotus and N. Shingle Rds through El Dorado, or we can stay on CA49 through Placerville which we have never done. Another route is going through Coloma on 49 and then take Cold Springs Rd into Placerville. There are a half a dozen ways to get through El Dorado County. Depends on how fast (straight) or how curvy (slow) you want to go.
All routes are the same on the southern end using 49 bypass to Jamestown and Mono Way. Let me know which is preferable and I will print up maps and driving directions. Do we have a head count?
I avoided Forrest Hill Bridge so Mike would not get lost again.
Well, I'd vote for the first route, "lots of fun" and avoids lots of Hwy 49 which we've already seen lots of on previous fun runs to Gil's. But I am totally flexible.
I too vote for route #1, with the understanding that by virtue of being "fun" the dish I bring will need to be secured well.
