National Meet

We have been talking about rotating the annual national meet across the country. Here is the way I understand the schedule:

2007 - Springfield, IL, Route 66 Autofest (September 28 - 30)
2008 - Charlotte, NC, Lowes (Charlotte) Motorspeedway (Sept.)
2009 - ??? (Texas, Snellville, GA?)
2010 - West Coast (Tacoma, OMC?)
2011 - Carlisle, PA (May)

The national meet concept is for the one show to go to if you can only go to one. The regional clubs will still support their local events.

Thoughts? Comments? 2007 and 2008 locations are fixed. The others are just suggestions. I will update this post as dates change.

I have said it before, and I will say it again. When I see all the meetings and car shows and stuff you got over there, I sometimes wish I was living in the US of A.

The 2008 Charlotte Nationals will be either in April or mid September. That date will be set by next April but as of now, it looks as if it will be a September date because that will make it a year after the Nationals in Springfield in 2007 instead of 6 months between shows if we held it in April.
I guess I need a show of "hands" as what most people would prefer, Mid April or Mid September in 2008....

Gary;
Just throwing a thought in here for 2009, what about the Orphan Car Show here in Snellville? It's the first weekend in May.

2007 National Meet

The dates for the 2007 National Opel Meet at the Route 66 Mother Road Festival in Springfield IL will be Sept 28-30. I will be starting a thread on this earlier than I would have otherwise due to the fact I think more folks may be looking at attending this than in a normal year. Gary if you could please show the date in the coming events box on the home page. I will throw some ideas out for what to do during the event when we get the thread going.
Thanks
John

Well, if no one speaks up, how about the Orphan Car Show here in Snellville. It's the first weekend in May, one day event. I would love to blow out the Studebaker club....besides, we can have a BBQ at my house, or meet at anyone of several nice resturants in the area, plenty of shopping (about 8 malls within an hour of my house) Six Flags, Stone Mountain, Kennesaw Mountain, Road Atlanta, YearOne, golf, you name it....

Sounds like a great idea - it would be cool to have the National meet in Atlanta in 2009!

Kalispell, Montana would be a great place for a meet, too, you know.
Picture a pack of Opels cruising through Glacier National Park... it would be unforgettable.

No Opels were harmed in the filming of this movie.
However two Mustangs, a Pinto, and a Capri were hospitalized.
One Mustang was euthanized the next morning.

Speaking of drives, there's a wonderful route through the north GA mountains, and ending up with a stop over for beers and food in "Alpine" Helen, GA. Great place, and awesome drive. Also we're not that far from the "Tail of The Dragon" Which I'd LOVE to take a few Opels down through there!!!

If there's an Opel meet on the 'tail of the dragon', I'm just going to have to put a license plate on my race car for that...

It'd be worth getting a few Opels together if you'd come for that!!

Deals Gap on the TN/GA line. That's not all that far from where I grew up. The joke used to be that some of the curves were so sharp you could see into the back seat.

Deals Gap!? I think my son and I took out there on an Appalachian Trail backpack trip back in the 80's. Only time I was there.

2009 Nationals

Just bumping this thread. We need to pick a location for the 2009 Nationals. Tacoma? GA? Carlisle? CA? TX? Canada?

Thoughts? Any volunteers?

Personally, I think that it needs to be a big show for the national exposure. I've been to Carlisle and now the Auto Fair and can say that both shows are big enough to satisfy that criteria. I have never been to the Tacoma show or anything in Texas. As found as I am on the Orphan Car Show, I would actually like to see it at the Super Chevy Show if it were here in Atlanta. Texas has a few Super Chevy Shows as well. How big a show is the one that they normally put on for the Texas regional event? I had talked to a representative from SCS that had made some nice offers if we were to have the nationals at a SCS event. Everyone would be allowed to enter their Show N Shine, which is unjudged but a few Chevy powered cars would also be allowed to enter the Judged show the preceeding day. You might have some national publications at a show like this that might insite a printing in one of their publications.

I think if no one in Texas wants to take it over.. then I would say Georgia or the NEOC show, or possibly the Hemmings Sports & Exotic Show on Memorial day..

But looking at those that posted comments to this thread.. and the fact no where do you mention your own show That Georgia would have it..

It seems when we have this discussion, the Tacoma meet is mentioned. But no one from that area ever comes to the table.. I would love to have it in Texas or Tacoma since it will have been east of the Mississippi for the last 3 years..

As for future events.. 2010 was planned as the OMC year.. Thier 30th Anniversary, and 2011 was planned for Carlilse as our 15th.. (ugh that makes me feel old..)

This 'cuz I know I do not have the time to plan or manage a quality show.
