How is this for an idea, if Rick is up to it? Rick, order a new donut, support bushings and a rear pinion seal. The ones in there are over 30 yrs old so even if this isn't the culprit, his rear axle gets a nice refreshing. We just need someone with the "star" tool for the 4 bolts which hold the torque tube to the rear axle. I would suggest replacing these bolts with metric stainless steel hex heads.

If this doesn't fix it, then the only other things I can think of is the center bearing(rare) or U-joint on the driveshaft(possible). I only had one of those go bad on me and that was on a '74 Manta Luxus.

For what it's worth, the hillclimb car will be going to the blaster tomorrow, so that will leave my lift empty. You're welcome to come and use the lift if it will make your life easier. Let me know what you want to do.

Remember guys, I described what the problem sounded like from above after a couple of 10-foot rolls in Rick's driveway. I never said it was the definitely the donut or anything else. Hopefully that's it (and it deserves replacing after 34 years), but don't look at me if something else shows up.

While we're down there let's fix that droopy exhaust once and for all. And Rick, I have a spare rear axle seal for that right side.

Duane, blasting the hill climb car? I thought that's what the hill was supposed to do. What color are you thinking?

Don't worry, we won't hold you to it. Troubleshooting with your ear or over the internet is shakey at best. We just plan to "freshen" up his car.

Rear end problems? Droopy exhaust? Sounds like middle age to me

I want to start with a clean shell so I can see all of the metal work that needs to be done. It will make it a lot easier to do the work also. I haven't decided on color yet. There are a few things rattling around in my brain, but I haven't settled on one yet.

I took a spin in Ricks GT last night. I surely sounds like a torque tube issue. The clutch is also pretty far out of adjustment. As mentioned, the exhaust is in need of attention too. My biggest concern is the whining noise that the rear diff is making. Combined with a known gear lube leak, I'm guessing the pinion bearing is running dry.

I only drove it in Rick's driveway so I didn't notice the whining. There was some oil built up in the middle of the floor as well as in the right wheel so if the pumpkin gasket is good then the pinion seal is bad, yes? Haven't done one in 20 years, as I recall there is an end nut and a collapsible spacer back there ahead of the bearing. Duane would know better than me. Can you get that stuff from OGTS?

It was actually the first time I had sat in a GT and pushed a pedal. I was surprised my head fit under the roof without a problem.

Replacing the pinion seal only requires removal of the torque tube and torque tube housing. You can remove and replace the seal without disassembling the pinion assembly.

If you have a seal removal tool, it is a 10 minute job once the torque tube has been removed. If we don't do it a Duane's, let me know and I will get the tool.

Dang Rick, I thought I was the only one to develop problems on the way home.

I started to have problems (grinding) getting in to 3rd gear (going up and down)...figure the synchronizer is gone.

At least I remembered how to double clutch and got home

I'm now looking for a good 4 speed transmission to install this winter (can't afford a getrag 5speed)

I don't have the facilities (and knowledge) to rebuild what I got.

Oh well I needed something to keep me out of trouble anyways.

Update: I found someone kind enough to let me have one of there 4 speed trannies (BQS4) so I will have something to tackle this fall....yea!
Thanks againe Gene!

I am pretty available - unless you don't want me cursing your car.

If Duane's offer stands that would make life a lot easier. Plus, he has the tool we need (and the best tool set generally). Drop an email or give me a ring.
