Tony and I made it back home right at 11pm, but, what a great day!! That's to the hospitality of Keith and family, and the generosity of Kieth's father letting us use his dyno. I think there were about 11 Opels in all, mostly GT's and Matt's Solstace. As Dieter mentioned in his post, his cell phone drowned in a cup of coffe, and while gassing up in Chattanooga, Dieter's shifter broke, AGAIN! But, Dieter definitely has a guardian angel on his shoulder, as in Charlotte, there was a welder there, in Chattanooga, he had his trusty 1/2 drive extension in his trunk. Needless to say, the Dieter's Manta has been retired for the winter while a shifter is either found or made. The unveiling of Matt's "new" GT was awesome. Like looking back 30+ years. Even though some details are not like what it was in the 70's, it still was something to behold. Then Keith took it into the shop and ran it up on the lift to see the underside. If only we could keep Opels this clean on the underside. One after the other, Opels were run on the dyno, even the 9K mile, Kadett with the 1.1 and automatic. Then we went to run Tony's future Manta with the newly rebuilt mystery motor. As is was installed, but, never really run. I took it around the block, per Dieter's suggestion, to warm it up. Got just down the road and ran out of gas. A quick trip by Keith the gas station and the car fired back up. The first pull, though it was running rough, 51 HP at the rear wheels. Harold and several others dived under the hood and made a few quick ajustments and the next pull netted 61 HP! Hmm, this will get interesting. Tony was impressed! But, all good times come to and end, and we had to head back to GA. I didn't know about my trailering lights, but, I wasn't using my Blazer, but, a borrowed Explorer. But, a great time was had by all and we decided to personally sign a TN Opel t-shirt Keith had made up for the day to use as a "get well" card for Tom Akins. Keith will be sending it out to him. I'll post pics later, when I get them re-sized.
Again, Thank you Keith and family for a wonderful time!! Last edited by BQS4; 09-30-2007 at 09:17 PM.. |

It was a great day, in great company, with great opels all around. I met some new people and the unveiling of Matt's GT was really something. The Dyno was a really cool exprience even if I personally wasn't the one to run on it. Fortunately, no ones motor blew but it was pretty nerve racking seeing all the cars rev more and more. I was very suprise to see what the Mystery Manta pulled. Later, I will post plent of pics of Matt's car, the other cars at the event, videos of the unveiling, some of Matt's test runs (unforyunately I missed the burnout that Keith did), and some video's of the pulls that some people made. It was all a real treat.
Thank-you Keith for the gas, the pizza, the great time, and everything else. Thank-you to you dad for everything with the Dyno. Congratulations Matt on your GT! Get well Tom. Thank-you Harold for leading the tune-up on my soon to be Manta. It was a pleasure to me all the new people. |

Dyno Numbers
I will be getting with my father for the complete list of cars and numbers. Seems like we all ran high compression motors, some with head work, and some are questionable. Bear ran his GT several times that Harold built, trying to tune it and get more out of it. At the end they actually came up with a lower HP number, but their curve was a lot smoother, actually looked great compared to anything during the day. The highest was either from that car or from Matts actually. It was a race by tenths of a horsepower, but I will post those. We ranged from 55-64 HP at the rear wheels on inertia runs. My mighty Kadett pulled a 28HP!!!!! I might bump it up next year so I can blow everyone away with my low 30s
. We really did have a blast, and it seemed like this meet was quite a bit different as no one really ever seemed to get bored, or uninterested. There was always something going on, or people working on there car. We had 11 Opels and 1 Solstice. About everyone ran their car except Dieter. I guess he thought he might break the dyno and then "its all Dieter's fault". We will also send our information to Land and Sea, to make sure we were at correct settings. We are still new to the equipment and the numbers are still subject to change, we did not get a good reading on the Solstice, so we are looking into why. I will post those numbers if they change...its still raw data and they can put in correct settings to give us a little better accuracy just in case we are wrong. Now that doesn't mean that you will show more horsepower compared to another Opel now, it will change theirs as well to make it higher or lower, so the order of highest to lowest should remain the same. Thanks again everyone for coming, we had a great time and look forward to making a bigger Dyno day next year. Dynomite........................
WOW!
You guys and gals had 11 Opels compared to the 26 (as I counted them) at the Opel Nationals at the Route 66. OK, did I read 28 HP on the rear wheels on your beauty Keith. Was that at 5500 rpm? Did anyone have the guts to redline a dyno? They (Dyno techs at Carlisle a couple years ago) went to 5500 on Ms. Opel and they pulled 49 HP on the rear wheels. Matt, your GT (particularly the undercarriage) and the interior pictures were awesome. The last time I saw it the unibody was on the roisterer (the thing that turned it over and over - by hand). Parts were all upstairs except the drivetrain. Powercoating was awesome! Keith, you exceeded my expectations. The Georgia Group are a great group and Deiter can improvise with the best of them. Did Harold Jr. have his screwdriver set? Bet he drove the Buick. I'm going to his farm and find his Opel someday. ![]() Finally, thanks Gene for the heads up on the signed Dyno Day T-Shirt - I don't usually shead a tear ( yes, I cried for the first time in a long time ). But you all got to my emotions flowing with that sense of community. To me, within this Opel group it is not just a "sense" - my experience is that we are a "REAL Community of concerned Opel citizens". Thanks again for the videos, pictures and description of the event. |

Quick post...
WOW - what an experience from start to finish! Denise and I stayed over Saturday night in Cookeville and picked up the car Sunday morning to head back to Atlanta. I led in the GT and Denise followed in the Solstice. By the time we got back and ate dinner, we were just exhausted from all the activity and emotion. So, I'm just now getting a chance to jump on the site (which is running extremely slow right now for me). I have a ton of "thank you's" to post, lots of pix and video, some great experiences to relate concerning our trip back to Atlanta, and a final PROJECT post I am putting together. However, I'm at work right now so that will be later tonight and tomorrow.
First and foremost however - THANK YOU KEITH! I didn't just buy a restored car, I bought a life experience and made a good friend in the process. More later... Matt P.S. Just a teaser - on the drive back, the GT was called "f---in' bad ass" by some guys and even drew the praises of some smokin' college girls! I'll elaborate later... |
