Opel Dyno Day in Tennessee!!9-29-07

The Tennessee Opel Club will host an Opel meet in Cookeville, TN on September 29th, 2007. This will be our first meet in quite a while so I urge people to attend.

Come out to see the Opel Dyno challenge!!!! I will have a mobile drive on dynometer at the meet for anyone to run their car-absolutely free!!!!!!!!!
Awards for lowest horse power and most horsepower

We will also be celebrating the completion of Matthew Newman's 1972 Fireglow GT. He will be taking delivery of the car, so come out and support him as he drives home the GT everyone got to see restored.

We will be able to tune on Opels as well, and can see if any considerable increase was made with the use of the dyno.

I will have my 9000 mile Kadett there as well An original unmolested 1972 GT will be in attendance as well as other GTs. A possible dirt race 1900 will be there too.

I will post directions on this thread, please come out, especially you Atlanta area Opelers who will be recieving another new GT member. Email me for more details as well at keithlundholm@yahoo.com

Cool Can't wait...

I'm counting the minutes Keith!!! For the Atlanta area members that are considering attending, I can get from the Lawrenceville area to Cookeville, TN in almost exactly four hours including one stop for fuel and something to eat. It's all expressway and a very easy drive and there are some nice scenic parts along the way. I hope to see everyone there!

It sounds very tempting and is not too far, but I can't make a commitment until maybe 2 weeks before the meeting.

Dyno day info needed

I have several people coming, that decided the National meet was too far away, but TN was a little closer. Not wanting to compete here, just the date 29th was picked. If you think you are coming and bringing a car, let me know, as I will get your T-shirt size and have one ready for you. I am providing shirts for coming out. I will have a couple extra made in the large and ex-large for surprise participants. If you just want to order a shirt, well send me an email and I will return one with a link to the company for ordering. So far I have possible 8 cars, that will be there. Working on getting a few more. Let me know

Phoenix, I was going to try to persuade you and your Uncle to show, bring other Opel people from that area as well. I will have to get on the phone with some people to get them going maybe as well.

I can't commit until closer to time but I'm going to change from the nationals to your event for the Dyno, I've never had a free shot at a dyno and that fresh engine NEEDS to show it's stuff.

THANKS

Post 'em

Kieth,
Could you Post the results when you get done? The Texas group did this about 2 1/2 years ago, I will see if I can come up with our list of participants and their HP numbers at the wheel and some did a 1/4 mile run also on the Dyno. "Killer" was up around 150 hp, and Marty Riemer "Stock GT" was around 130 hp. Man I hope I can find that list there where about 8 to 10 Opels that day that got up on the Dyno.
It was very interesting to see the results and quite a few where surprised at what their Opel could do.

True on conditions

We will be using a Land and Sea dyno. We have the weather station, and O2 wideband hookup, also we have the water brake to apply load if you want to see real holding power, but usually we will not use that as it can cause a breakdown. I even have 4 point lealand scales for measuring weight at all 4 corners. I do not think I will have that set up though.
Keith
Gene I am checking on that size of shirt. Do you want white or gold for the shirt?

Shirts are coming

I have shirts ordered now. I think they look pretty good, contrary to what Harold thinks, everyone I showed them to really liked them. I guess he will just have to design and buy his own. Anyways, I am getting everything in line for the show. Calling and will be mailing to some that may have changed contact info.

Lightbulb Sideshow to the main event...

Obviously this event is going to be a huge day for me personally as I’ll be taking delivery of my ’72 Opel GT that Keith has worked so hard on restoring. This event is all about the Opels of course but every main event needs a sideshow too. So, I thought I would mention that I will be making the drive up to Cookeville in my ’06 Pontiac Solstice. Thus, if you’re interested, you’ll have an opportunity to check out what I like to call the new Opel GT’s first cousin on its Father’s side (referring to Bob Lutz’s role in both the original Opel GT program and Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky/Opel GT Kappa program). If time allows and Keith is agreeable, I would also like to put the Solstice on the Dyno. I have had the ECM reprogrammed and installed a CAI and am interested in how that has improved the 177 HP rating of the naturally aspirated Solstice.

Matt

Did you dyno it when it was stock? The factory HP ratings are at the flywheel, while a chassis dyno measures at the drive wheels. So a stock 177 hp engine probably won't show much more than 150+/- hp at the rear wheels. There are so many variables that can affect it! Even tire pressure and tread pattern will affect the wheel hp.

OK, this is quite a temptation...I would love to see what my 71' GT with turboed engine from an 88' Thunderbird would pull. Just on the highway it completely pushes me into the seat when I stomp on it.

For some reason I think that date is spoken for, but I will be checking for sure.

Lastly, I did find a place to work on my car, and as of now the speedo, tach, and all the electronics like those important things called headlights are working. I just have to go pick it up to see what kind of speed I can get out of her. More to come...

Understood on the rear wheel HP versus engine HP. I unfortunately did not Dyno the car stock. I do have access to some stock numbers that I will have to use as a baseline. However, as you point out, many factors can alter the results. This won't be a scientific before and after comparison but it should be interesting to find out. Having access to the Dyno is going to be a lot of fun for sure!
