Just as the value of a performance appraisal at work is the "areas for improvement" so that you can better your career, I think the real value in entering your car in a show is the report that indicates where you could improve your standing in the future. So, while I agree that a positive approach is nice, I would hope that the judges report would still indicate areas for improvement so that an owner can use that report to focus on specific areas to better their car's standing in its class. I'm definitely a "glass half full" person, but I like to hear where I could do better too.

    Matt,
Your assessment of this is exactly why I think that the the owners of the cars that are judged should receive the judging form that was used to judge the cars for awards. Even if someone doesn't win an award, he or she would know what the judges are looking for.
Making the judging form is what myself and others on this site are trying to do now. As a group, we can come up with something that will be uniform for all of us to go by for the larger events. That way, no questions as to what is expected at the "big" shows. People will know by looking at the judging form, what is expected. Like I have said before, this can only help improve the Opels in the long run.

Say have everyone start off with 50 points, and plus given for exceptional improvements, and deductions for flaws. That I think would be best. When judging on a simple 1-5 or 1-10 scale. It creats a lot of cars that get 5 at the front end and 4 at the back end as judges try to adjust.

If every can in every calss is assumed to be an average of 50, then only cars with exceptional paint, or details get pluses, and when major flaws show up they get deducted.

    Lets say judging paint..

An average car may have a few runs or a little orange peel, and maybe a few oversprayed areas. Those are overlooked and not deducted for.

But car with NO orange peel, No Scratches, NO overspray would get say an extra 30 points. A car with a major scratch, or a big run, or a major spot where the paint is thin, or a lot of overspray would get equally deducted off thier 50 points. Each deduction or addition would be noted and explained.

Something like that I think would be the best way to do the points..

I will work on a judgin spreadsheet and post here to see what everyone thinks.

I agree 100%. But I think that for a show such as the larger events that we have a few times a year, it would be nice to have a more uniform way of judging that makes it fun for everybody involved.
Heck, I could care less if I win something. I am just happy to be around people that share the same enthusiasm for Opels that I have. At the same time, what would a "National" event like this and places like Carlisle, the OMC Picnic, etc., be without awards....

So, then, should points be deducted for the cars that are trailered instead of driven?

Now Roy, I can't believe you said that especially after all that whining and you've been doing for not ever winning anything. Y'all it's pitiful to see a grown man act like Roy does when he loses.

    Trailor Queens

I think due to the distance, alot of people will trailer their cars, wether it be due to mileage or road debris, I make it a habit to trailer mine if the show is over 100 miles away. I do not like to be at someone elses mercy when I break down. I guess if you are worried about competing with trailer queens, you would be worried about competing with broken down vehicles as well, as I have pulled a weak Opel into this show before. Would have made for a good Hard Luck Award.

    Classes

OK... Here we go... After reviewing inputs from Opelers, I have come up with a "VERY ROUGH DRAFT" of classes we can put our Opels into at the larger events. Please feel free to hack, destroy, add to it... what ever you feel needs to be done. This is just a "platform" to begin the process of getting the Classes right for all concerned.
After we come up with a list of the classes the cars should be held to, I think that the owner of the Opel should "declare" which class he or she wants to be in at the show. That would make it much easier for the judges.
The rough drafts for the judging forms have been made and have been passed on to others who are going to look at them to see what can be done to improve them. After getting their ideas back, I will post the form here as well, for everyone to check out. If you want to see the "judging form" as it is now, just let me know and I will send it on to you.
    Thanks!

    Roy;
Just a quick question, what about 5-spds? Would that come under STOCK (Allowed Changes)? This would be any Opel that was 4-spd/auto to start with and converted to 5-spd.

Hummm... I don't think anyone thought about the 5-speed tranny. I would think that could still go under "stock" since it's an upgrade like a weber is an upgrade. The car still looks stock...
I just changed it on the list... Thanks Gene...

Well, some would look at it as a modification, but, you can still have a totally stock GT/Manta/Ascona/Kadett and just have a 5-spd, so it would actually be an upgrade. Just trying to make sure it's clear for everyone involved.

Do "cosmetic" enhancements (powder coating, chroming, extra paint, etc.) still allow for a car to be "stock"? In other words, are only mechanical changes considered when deciding between "stock" and "modified/custom"? Obviously I'm trying to figure out which of these categories my GT would fit into.

    Thanks,

    Matt

Matt, I would think that powder coating would be an OK enhancement as well as chroming. I guess the extra paint would just mean a regular paint job and not flames down the side! Nothing wrong with a good paint job!

Mostly it would be Stock (Modified), same is true for 5 speed conversions, 2.0L upgrades, etc..

The seperation between Modified and Stock (Modified) would be things like seats, mirrors, rim style, spoilers...

It probably comes down to a judgement call by the judges where the line is drawn depending on the number of cars in each category, and how modified some are and how close to stock "looking" the cars are.

There probably is no "perfect" solution without going into 30 different classes.. which would probably be a few more than we have cars
