Well just registered my 72 GT for the 16th annual
Kool April Nites in Redding, CA. Probably be the only Opel there unless any of you fellow Opelers wants to make it a Rally with me this year! Haven't seen any GTs there in the past. Not as big as Hot August nights in Reno, NV. But Redding would like it to be I'm sure! Money too be had ya know! It's $40 to register you get two passes and there are 68 trophy prizes. April 6-10the actual cruise and show & Shine 9-10 on the weekend, as well as a poker run for a cash prize. You can Check it out @www.koolaprilnites.com. All entries must be made before April 1st. and it's limited to 2000 cars. 1975 and older only. I will know more when they send me my enrty info packet. So what about it ? Wasp you live the closest, West Coast GT is a bit farther in the San Fran area. I've only got one guest room, but have an acre of land in the pines to camp out if it doesn't rain again this year! I also have a kegerator with Miller on tap and can manage a Bar B Que as well. April is still burn season so we could also have a fire pit out side at my place. Be Great to have a group of Opels there, I don't need all the attention. I might even see if Gil & Dennis from OGTS want to show, naaah one of them would take the trophy for sure! a bit too far, sorry
I love to do car shows with my '56 Nomad but have not yet taken my new found GT to any shows. I am not sure that I will have the car ready or the time to go,
but I will surely consider it. I have never seen any Opels at shows in my area( Monterey County, CA) if I can manage the trip I will definitely let you know. Chris |

Not quite finished, so from Colorado I'll have to say maybe the OMC nothing in April. By the way what is the statute of limitations in California for say, wreckless, evading and exhibition of speed? Just curious, not like I came out of Oregon crossing the border doing all it would do or anything. Darn Opel throttles have a knack of sticking wide open with twins, that's my story and I'm stickin to it. BTW most police don't know they don't have power steering, so how can you shut down a runnaway and loose your steering? Ok I crossed the border doing 145 in the white car. I'd like to take the daughter there so statute of limitations would be good to know.

Finally some replys, not looking good for the Opel!
And I thought Opel was GM's Bastard child, well your right as Opelphile said haven't seen any Opels at a car show either. Seems only Oplers go to Opel meets 3000 miles away and that's it I guess? Don't know as I'm new to the Opel community, I won't relist this every weekend anymore guys.
Might be to my benifit to just skip showing my stock 72 Opel Gt since it seems I'll be a loaner. Maybe it's best I change my entry to the Sterling VW Kit car, at least it will get more attention and maybe even take one of the 68 Trophys! Neither car is abosolute perfect mind you, just something about a fiberglass kit car that is only 3 ft tall to the top of the cockpit and only wieghts 1,800 lbs. Power to weight, lower center of gravity with 1835 cc and cam, roller rockers and dual 40mm Webers. Wasp, glad you could answer Nobobys query, I wouldn't know as I've never had more than a speeding ticket! Regards, Rick Last edited by rangerrick; 02-27-2005 at 09:51 AM.. |

I'd love to get to a show. Especially out west. Unfortunately I'll be at Basic then so it's kinda out of the question. I sure that those of you that go, or even those that don't, will be having much more fun than I will be!

I totally understand what your's in for!
Did my 9 weeks of basic back in 1976 in Orlando for the USN. The first two to three weeks is the worst!
They want to see what makes or breaks you and if you can follow orders and work as a team (company) Keep your mouth shut and listen and learn, from your fellow airmen recruits. Probably surprise you that some older than yourself, still aren't grown up yet! Thanks for your post and Good Luck in your new career!I was really exspecting more support from local California Opeler's, don't get it and doesn't make me feel like driving 10-12 hrs. to OMC in LA area either? Why do some drive from as far as the East Coast to go to LA? Especially when it's a car show of the same thing Opels Anything South of San Francisco (even San Jose where I was born) Sucks, don't even feel comfortable being there; yet alone driving in it with a Classic Automobile!!!Regards, Rick |

Rick,
We may have gone to the show if we still lived in the area. We moved here to Atlanta last Nov. We did live in Santa Cruz for the last 25 years, and every visit we took to Redding was a blast. What about that dealership up there with two GT's in the showroom?? Never did get to see those in person. One was never sold I believe?? Brian |

On this same topic I am driving out to Washington to visit some friends this week. I live in Wisconsin and this is my first trip past the rockies. It seems like all the cool car places are in the Cali area. Any place worth stopping at?

I've seen the two GT's there at Taylor Motors, very clean and very expensive! $17,000 for the New 73 with 107 miles on the odometer. I think the comment it never sold is BS, more like it was never registered and more than test driven. Taylor motors bought it from the Harahs collection in Vegas, so Taylor motors wasn't the original owner! The other one they have there is a very clean restored Black car that was originally yellow from the tell tale chips in the paint, $9,000 for that one. And yes there's a lot to do and see in the Redding area Shasta Dam, Whiskey town lake, Mt. Shasta Ski park only 50 miles North of here. Not to mention wev'e had some 70 degree days already this year. I'll be up to Kool April Nites. But just for the weekend, not the whole week. Haven't decided on making it an over-nighter or just a day trip. Don't mind camping out. Especially if there's some possibility of a fire and beer.
Speaking of camping out, I must have just passed your place last weekend on my way up to snowcamping. We reached 7720 feet altitude, snowshoe'd back a ways and built snowcaves for the night. Had over 19 feet of base snow, and it dumped 2 more feet over night. Had to dig one person out of her snowcave. Had to cut trail back to the cars. Had to dig the cars out. Goin' back up March 12th, lower elevation, Loon Lake. Hoping for the same great snow. Kool April Nites - can't bring my GT, it's still under salvage title. I'll drive one of the non-Opel convertibles up. Are you going up for the whole week, or just the weekend? As to showing the Opel or the Sterling VW kit car, its up to you, but I do think there's a lot of folks out there that get a kick from seeing an Opel. It always reminds them of one they use to own, or one that someone they knew had. I went to a show last year and saw one of those original Honda civics with the tiny two cylinder engine about the size of a GM starter. Had the small oval window in back. I was 15 when they first hit this country, and I wanted one in the worst way. And while the car being shown wasn't in that great of shape, it was just flat cool to see one again after all these years. So think about showing the GT and don't worry if its not perfect. Its got a whole lot of cool quotient. |

Undecided about the whole week?
Not sure about a week of participation, is doable since I live 25 miles East of Redding, 22 miles West of Mt Lassen Park on HWY. 44
West Coast GT You & the misses are welcome here at our home if you should decide to spend the night we have a spare room with a double bed, since you seem to be the only one coming your'e welcome to it! Or you can sleep in a tent up to you, were at 2,500 so you wont have to worry about building a snow cave. Yep there's always a keg of Miller and plenty of firewood for a campfire, oh and bring your trunks as we also have a nice Hot Tub as well! (I'll PM you our phone number) My brother's trying to get me to show both cars, and he drive one. Not sure if I want to spend another $40 as this is the first time ever I've participated in a car show, hopefully all will go well. I hear this show is a snob too VW types, Sterlings a bit differnt than a Bug though! see for yourself www.sterlingcentral.com I spoke with Gil today @ OGTS ordering some more parts! Asked him about Kool April Nites in Redding, Ca. and he said he hadn't heard of it! Soo I invited him to join me if him and Dennis could make it and emailed him the HTTP:www.koolaprilnites.com, he said he had no problem with getting into his GT and going to a show if business allows and will think on it! I think it would be a good example of the basic bone stock GT (mine) and the extreme (his) he's sending me some Business cards to pass out & maybe some catalogs!!! Is anyone showing their Opel this weekend at the "Cool April Nites" show?
I'll be there, but not in my GT because the friend I'm bringing has a bad back. And you all know how the GT seats are on our backs. Except Namba of course who actually finds the GT's seats comfortable????? RangerRick, If I remember correctly you were diverting your attention to a Studebaker. Are you still into the Opel? And will you be attending Cool April Nites? |
