What kind of coil do you have on the car? Every Opel I've had has had a coil problem. My first GT had the exact same symptom you described. I first thought it was the infamous fuel sock, then noticed it started happening at shorter and shorter intervals. I eventually got a clue it was ignition related when I noticed the tach would just shoot straight to zero when it would act up. A Bosch Red coil fixed the problem in short order and I drove it for another two years without incident.
My most recent coil issue was just this year, when my manta started showing ignition symptoms and I had already gone through the entire ignition system. I had fears that it was an intermittent pertronix cut-out, but I figured that was highly unlikely...again a coil fixed the problem.
I also had coil problems on a lime green manta 5+ years ago that I was going to turn into an autocross car (never happened)...I used to affectionately called it The Lizard.
I think I'd first try bypassing the charcoal canister that Bill described, but after that if the problem persists I'd go straight for the coil, especially if it's a stock unit and you're having ignition-like problems...HIGHLY doubtful it's the pertronix, but stranger things have happened I'm sure.

Opels - gotta love them

Thanks Tod - I was thinking ignition myself. I didn't think it could be the fuel injection after the muffler blew up! In order for gas to collect in the muffler, it would have to go thru the FI system. Seems logical, anyhow.

Speaking of the exhaust, I need to replace the muffler. Any suggestions as to what works best on the Manta? Is it the same as the GT? Bill Hoffman has a great sounding exhaust, I wonder what he uses?

allen i used to have the same thing happen to me took ages to find (well a little old man walking by told me as i was stood scratching my head and cussing at the car as it was the 4th time in an hour it happened)

change the king lead from the coil to the dizzy its going bad and when it gets to hot the resistance is going up till it cant carry spark to the dizzy
when it cools for 5 min (hood up so no under hood heat ) it is back to where it can work so it looks like it has fixed itself

I have the dreaded Pacesetter header, 2" pipes, and a Dynomax muffler. I will be working on the exhaust soon, however, and will probably go to a 2.25" pipe over the axle and some type of bullet style muffler in the back.

Allen;
You can get a muffler to fit at most compitent muffler shops. I use MIDAS, as they have a nice turbo type that works great on my Sportwagons (Same as your Manta) and if Bill has done like most of us have, you leave the back resonator/tailpipe off and runn a straight pipe from the front muffler, over the axle, and out the back. This gives the Manta/Ascona a real nice sound.

Had A great time

I would also like to thank John and Connie for putting it all together. It was great to meet all of you there. I was sorry that I did not get to say goodby. Saturday night I was able to connect with a old neighbor that I had not seen in 25 years. I look forward to seeing all of you again.

Bill & Gene - I was thinking of taking the ruined muffler off and putting in a Turbo type muffler, replacing the resonator with a straight pipe, then using a resonator tip, similar to the Pacesetter. What do you think?

Does the 2" pipe make that big of a difference?

Thanks again for all of your ONGOING help! (I need all I can get)!

Thanks John and Connie

Glad to see everybody made it back safe and sound. This was my first time at the event and wish I had more time to see it all. Weather was perfect. It was great to meet other Opelers, there aren't many in my part of the country. It was fun to see a 1.1 Gt similar to the one I had back in 1972 and it had been along time since I had seen an Opel other then a GT. Thanks John and Connie for all your work and hospitality, thanks to OGTS for the door prizes. Hopefully I can make it again next year. Connie, got to have another Ponyshoe at Darcy's!

Allen;
If you find just a dual chrome tip, it doesn't have to be resonated, it'll give the Manta a real nice sound.

There are other threads about this, but even a stock f.i. motor will breathe better if you have your muffler shop cut off the headpipe where the two tubes merge into one, and weld on a 2" pipe there. Then you can use 2" all the way back, or as Bob recommends, go to an even larger diameter over the axle, which is apparently the next biggest restriction. From there you can use a straight pipe out, or use a bullet style muffler to quiet it down a bit.

Bill - so I should have them extend where the 2 pipes are on the Headpipe 2" before joining them? should the new headpipe also be made from 2"?

Saxybiker, BQS4, here's the thread about the pipes and mufflers that I think you are looking for.http://www.opelgt.com/forums/6d-exhaust-system/2154-what-right-free-flow-muffler-1973-gt.html
Lenghty reading (7pgs). A couple of our club members have done this and swear by it. HTH, Jarrell

Allen;
It's not necessary to do the whole head pipe in 2", just start where the two come together and finish it out from there.

Hey everyone, I just posted pictures from John D's photo CD to the photo section on the site under the Route 66 Festival under Opel Events. After they're approved, you'll be able to see more fun times, fond memories, and way cool Opels. I'll be posting some of the nifty Route 66 landmarks I saw on the way to Springfield later this week. When do we start planning for next year?!!! ;-)

A couple of things real quick. First off thanks to Jeff Widder and his help with posting the photos. If others have some different shots please add them to the album. Also Connie and I want to thank all those who came and made it a great Opel weekend. Planning for next year is already happening. The folks who got us the awards have stated they will do so again next year. They will also let us have our regular corner again. I think Friday and Saturday nights dining went ok so unless the group feels otherwise we'll do em again. So Sept. 22-24 2006 plan to get your kicks on Route 66. Now to think a little farther ahead. If we want to attemp to make the 07 Route 66 Mother Road Fest a National gathering of Opels the event promoters have said they are willing to help and work with us. Let me know what you think you would like them to do.

Hi All,
I just posted the last of my photos from the Route 66 Fest, so take apeak if you're interested. These are some of the landmarks I stopped at on the way following Route 66 from its origin in downtwn Chicago to Springfield. It was a very neat way to travel, and gave a real sense of freedom, even cathartic in a way. Gotta love those road trips! See ya'll next year!

Unhappy T-Shirt Problems ?

Hi All
I have been meaning to post on this for awhile but had to do a little traveling and needed some answers from the shirt printers. Here is the situation. After the Mother Road Fest Connie washed the shirts we wore. One of those shirts lost what I felt was a large amount of the white print, the others came out pretty much okay. I contacted the printer and sent them the faulty shirt. They seem to think it was not cured properly. They do not want a bad product out there and are quite willing to replace any that show the same problem. So if you purchased one of this years shirts and have had a problem with it loseing print please contact me. I hope mine is the only one but if not lets get them taking care of.
Thanks
John
