I'm not sure if any video will be shot but that would be cool.

Keith - please send me some hi-resolution photos of the paint job via email and maybe attach one hi-res photo to the PROJECT thread (it looks like the site will allow you to go up to 300K on one JPEG file). I need a new wallpaper for my PC .

Thanks,

Matt

That is one heck of a paint job , dam I'm jealous , I wish I was as far as that

You are talking about: "We will be wetsanding and buffing the body", for what reason, when do you do this, is the paint hard enough, how is it done??

Wow, it has been too cool watching this process! Wondering how much of an awesome paint job is due to prep and how much is due to a skilled spray man? Looks this was the best of both! This thing is going to look so AWSOME going down the road, I bet you can't wait!

Looking nice Keith. Very cool to see it go from rusty shell to 'looks like new' painted shell!

Project changes

We are in a different forum now, but the newest updates do no appear on the main site for people to view. Hopefully this will be resolved shortly. Post all comments on this thread, as I am the only one posting onto the project, except for Matts in person visits.

Keith and Mid-Southern Restoration really are doing a great job. I couldn't be happier. Thanks for the compliments on the color scheme. As discussed earlier - it was a tough decision to make but I think it turned out great! I'm sure I'll be able to make at least one of the major shows next year with the car. I'm looking forward to that!

Thumbs up Recent updates...

A whole LOT has been done to the car over the past week and there have been 10 updates in the last two days alone! Just a few thoughts:

- I have been apprehensive waiting for the engine to get installed to see the blue and orange and silver color combination but with it all coming together now I know I like it!

- I think the Dynamat will be a real help in keeping out road noise and hopefully some heat given that Atlanta gets pretty toasty in the summer without engine heat pouring into the car to make it worse.

- With the stiff suspension keeping the car riding high, it looks like I could fit some 18" wheels in those wheel wells!

Lastly, I think the guys at Mid-Southern Restoration are becoming Opel fans. All the teasing and calling the GT "Chester Cheetos" or "Cheetos Diablo" are really just terms of endearment. It won't be long before they give up on all those muscle cars and Packards and start driving GTs and Mantas .

P.S. My GT's real name is "Sara" (although I am now considering "Sara Diablo" )

PO put Dynamat all over my GT: doors, firewall, tunnel. I'm was surprised the first time I had her on the highway that she wasn't noisy as I had read that they can be. Nothing to compare it to since this is the only GT I've ever driven on the highway. Heat is another matter. I get a lot of heat yet and most seems to come from the tunnel. I see Keith is apprehensive about putting it on the tunnel for carpet fitment. Easy enough to go back in later and add some sort of heat shield. I'm considering it. I had the steel plate that surrounds the ashtray area out and replaced with an aluminum cover for prettiness. That plate got so hot you couldn't touch it. The stick shift shaft also gets roaring hot. I've since put the steel plate back in and the aluminum on top and it's better but some sort of thin thermal blanket would help I'm sure. The Dynamat on there can't do much for heat I don't think.
Car's looking so nice I can't stand it. Makes me want to redo mine just so it's as pretty on the bottom as the top. (but I won't!).

Wet sanding and buffing is the final step in a custom paint job. It is done to remove the minor imperfections found after the paint dries. The cowl is the area directly in front of the windscreen, on all GTs it is painted black as is the area underneath it where the wiper motor and wiper arms are. HTH.

Respect for other nations

Ron is correct, but I have to say after my absolute dislike for British cars, I will not be calling the doors -wing windows or the hood -the bonnet. I use american terminoligy on all the car parts-sometime even american slang. We call the wind screen wiper area the cowl. Of course I usually call them- tha wipers.

Wetsand and buffing

When the paint dries/and sometimes even due to spray patterns and such, the paint will dry in an "orange peel" type of fashion. When painted well this is less noticable. When the proper amount of paint coats are applied, you actually sand off part of the clear coat to "flaten" the paint as in deminsion, not shine. When you have a nice flat surface, light reflects off it evenly causing the panel to look super straight. I've seen some paint jobs that I felt would be great, if they would just wetsand a little bit, and then polish. Many shops will skip this part, but it can remove runs, debris that fell onto the clear while drying, and other blemishes

I don't want to redirect this thread but the paint on my GT is "fair". I'm starting to think it could be made to look a lot better with elbow grease. I recently had my first crack at touch up
And am thinking of how to go about blending in my clear and possible doing several more spots. I've got some learning to do, any suggestions on step by step web sites or other sources? In my case, there's a lot of dirt flecks in the paint, some inconsistent areas where it's smooth then orange pealy. Would an investment in a buffer be in order? or just hand sanding?

Cool Congratulations!

Congrats Keith on getting your new shop set up!

My GT sure looks lonely in there. Great job on powder coating those pedals too - they look real nice.

Matt

P.S. Happy Independence Day to all our U.S. members!
