Saw the show

I just watched this on the TV the other day. I understand very little German, but I got most of what was going on. They are running this Opel Record on salad oil, 2000 km across Europe. I the episode I saw last, the car was running great but it they couldn't seem to find a place to sell them more oil. Well they ended up stopping overnight and the next day they couldn't get the car started be cause the oil had jelled and they were trying everything to get the engine to warm up enough to get it running again. I can't seem to figure out TV schedules so it's hit and miss as to if I catch the episodes.

A very interesting video. I don't speak German so I have to guess here.
Odd they painted the car etc, but didn't think to install heaters in the alternate fuel tank? I guessing the goal here is to just run on the salad oil (vegetable oil- alternate fuel). Most people that do use an alternate fuel will have 2 fuel tanks. They will run diesel when the motor is cold and use the heat from the anit-freeze running through piping to heat up the alternate-fuel in it's separate tank. Once that fuel is up to temp they flip a valve and run on alternate fuel. Before they shut it down they switch to diesel for a short period of time to get all the alternate-fuel out of the fuel system so she'll start up when she's cold. In Canada...new restaurant grade vegetable oil and diesel run about the same price......used oil is free if you can find a supply.

Running on just the alternate fuel is much more challenging....as these gents found out.

Right after posting my last reply I caught the next episode. The fuel oil is in a small container that is located behind the drivers seat and is suppose to be taken out each night. Mind you the couple who is driving the car seem to not have a routine figured out quite yet as the guy forgot to take the container out and the girl balled him out. They are traveling through quite a few different counties and they are knocking on peoples doors to get oil or ask direction to the local stores. Language barriers abound which makes for some funny moments. Getting the oil to warm back up seems to be a challenge as they started out in north Finland Saunas seem to be popular places to warm the oil in. Seems to be routine but they ended up having their support vehicle tow them until the engine started. Here is the next video in the series

Galileo vom 13. April 2007: Salatöl-Rallye Umrüstung des Autos

if you want to read up on it (in German) here is the link:

Galileo - Die Salatöl-Rallye

To those of you who understand German, please excuse my misinterpretation and correct me if need be. Also understand that I am watching this on the TV as well as the Internet and teh TV is further along
