crate motor

Here's a don't try this by yourself kinda deal. A fully built 75 block with a 68 head and 2.2 clutch with a Getrag 265. I can only guess at it's total weight but believe me it is a heavy one. Later today it leaves for Wisconsin. What a workout.

A cherry picker that mounts up to the back of the work truck comes in so handy at times like this...
Prior to the present rig I had some gin poles that rigged quickly to the bumper of my Blazer. It wasn't real heavy duty, it would lift an engine out of a ski boat if you were real careful. Believe it or not, it doesn't take much, just some careful rigging and common sense as to its capacity. The poles were just a couple legs off of a junk swingset.
Don't kill your back, it isn't worth it. Work smart.

Last night, we used our cherry picker to get the 2.0 we picked up in Carlisle unloaded from our SUV. We were able to swing it right over on to the engine stand. Quick and easy and no back injuries.

maybe i oughta look into it. it would be a prob if there were a few guys with me to help, we could lift them with no prob. but as far as i know, its just gonna be my fiance and i. thank goodness for ratcheting tie straps, the car doesnt run so thats what we'll use to get her onto the trailer. nobody wants to push it up on to it.

Dang guys, I quit messing with big blocks cause my back could not take the heavy parts anymore. Then I go to lift a head off an Opel...that thing in and of its self is darn heavy. I am thinking anything bigger then a B-series is going to be too much for me. Fast forward 20yrs down the road and I am now smart enough to say Hay come over for a beer and help me get this head off the Opel.

Anybody know what a Opel head weighs?

Cherokee;
With EVERYTHING, minus just the valve cover, it's right at 70 lbs

IIRC, a bare CIH head weighs about 58 lbs. But as Gene says, add the other parts such as the valves, springs, cam, lifters, and rocker arms and it's probably right at 70 lbs.

I remember when walking across my shop with an Opel head in each hand was no big deal, now I don't even like lifting one head onto a work bench!

Ain't it the truth. I remember when I purchased my first Opel parts stash I was emptying this guy's garage and could carry a bare engine block in each hand and load them on a trailer. I think my entire arm would be pulled out of my shoulder if I tried that now. Aging sucks, no doubt about it!

The things we did when we where young and stupid. Cars with open exhaust, shooting everything from .223 to .50 with no ear protection on.

A gallon of gas, 112 Octane was $7.14 at V.I.R. Sunday. 110 was $7.03. Thought about putting some in the Gt, but passed on it. Good looking engine Joe.

The crate is on wheels but the added weight from the 265 and clutch are around 75 pounds over stock. It's a heavy one to say the least. 110 racing fuel is all it's going to like as it's configured. I'm so glad it finally left so I can play with it's sister motor and a few other burning projects. On the other hand it's sister motor isn't on wheels.

It has the 2.0 pistons and rings from OGTS. 10 over crank and 20 over rods. 1.5 head with 2.0 Opel valves, 290 H cam from schneider with hydraulic lifters. 435 lift with 106 degree seperation. Mildly ported head. New chain, guides, pump gears, relief piston, starter, water pump, plugs NGK, wires cap rotor. 75 distibutor and 75 block, pertronics ignition with flame thrower coil. 2.2 clutch and flywheel with a Getrag 265 sporting a modified shifter. Drive shaft for you to modify, altered mounting for it all with a cross for the tranny. You already know about the intake and exhaust. Hardened seats, new guides, seals and all the associated. foo foo. I'm pretty sure it had the lighter alternator mount but positive it has new bushings for it. New bolts everywhere but the head. Steel pan and valve cover. I left a known good oil sender unit on it. GT motor brackets are there too. I left the oil prime plug loose and the valves will need adjusting. I blocked off the fuel pump on it too. Oh and the cam is 265 at .050. New dip stick rubber.....and a partidge in a pear tree.

Evidently.....this motor was lost in transit for those of you interested.....How a major co. Roadway Express can lose a motor and transmission is beyond me but, its gone. Now comes the fun part of coming up with reciepts for everything to file a loss claim to at least recover my money!! I'm hoping Dave will be able to cough up somthing for me to send them....... I am seriously contemplating just selling the GT and calling this whole mess a loss and finding a different car to give me headaches! Anyone interested in a 54k GT???????

It would be difficult for someone to get away with selling that motor as it was a one of a kind. And would definately bring attention. Makes me sick to my stomach......There is NO WAY i'm going to start over with another build,So the GT will be up for sale sooner than expected. I wash my hands of Opels......Even IF I can recover my cash, its too much for me to consider another build since this one was rather difficult.Cant even begin to tell you all how much money and time went into this car, what a shame.....
BTW if anyone EVER ships anything out of state of considerable size...DO NOT USE Roadway Express!!!!!!!!!!
Complete idiots!!!!

Call a lawyer, or at least threaten them that you are. Legal complications have an interesting way of making people work a little harder.
I had a 500 gallon water tank shipped by DHL - they lost it. After a very little bit of encouragement, they found it again.
You've got to remember, if the folks you're dealing with were smart enough to be doing something else, they probably would be. Just keep going up the ladder until you've found someone with more than two brain cells, then be very polite, but completly unyielding. Call every day, the motor will turn up.

Has Roadway officially informed you that it is gone or is there still a chance it can be found through the tracking number? I sent some glass from Texas to New Jersey and it took almost 6 weeks to get there. On the other hand, I sent some parts to New York and it took less than a week. Your sure that it can't be recovered?

1) Get in touch with the CEO (Bossman) of the Trucking Company and ask for an explanation - have waybills and shipping paperwork available to fax to him and quote pick-up details. Keep all paperwork originals, just send or fax copies.

2) Go to your local Chamber of Commerce and ask their advice.

3) If it has been "lost" or "stolen" it is an FBI matter as you are talking InterState commerce here. See your local Sherif or Police Chief.

4) Rattle LOTS of cages to sharpen their minds and make sure that it is not just incompetence at work.

5) If it turns up anywhere in the Opel Community someone will notice as it is a one-off custom motor well known and pictured.

6) NEVER give up - hound the trucking company till you have full tracking details of the shipment and who the individual involved at the time of disappearance was - then sue his ass to breakfast ... and back again.

7) Let only the appearance of the motor at your doorstep satisfy you ...

8) Make the bastards involved SUFFER.
