An Opel Moment

I've been working on my 1970 GT for 8 years. It's a car from Minnesota, so you know there was bodywork to do in addition to rebuilding the engine and replacing the front suspension. Lots of work but lots of fun too. I bought the car in 2000 and then had to build a garage around it to refurbish it in. Anyway, that 8 years paid off this year. It's licensed, insured and on the road. It's has proven reliable. What a wonderful little car. My peak Opel moment came this past weekend. My 6 year old son and I were driving through a small town after returning from a weekend visiting with family. I pulled over to take a cell phone call from a childhood friend. This friend has known of my love for the GT probably longer than anyone. I was with him when I saw my first GT. We were walking home from school (4th grade) and we saw an orange GT in a neighbor's driveway. I fell in love right there and promised my friend that someday I would own one. Fast forward 38 years. As I talk with my friend, my son sitting next to me, three shapely young ladies in short-shorts approach to ask if I would take a picture of them leaning provocatively on my car. In eastern european accents they say that they just love my car and want to send pictures back home to make the boys jealous. My friend says "well, this sounds infinitely more important than our conversation. That obsession of yours has finally paid off." Indeed! The pictures looked great, though I had no camera of my own. With no photo of my own, it is a memory that my friend, my son and I will share for the rest of our lives. Thank you Opel GT.
