Hi, I am about to paint my 71 GT in a shade of silverblue. I would like to stick with an Opel color. Does anybody have a nice picture of a #230 silverblue GT? I can't find one online.
One of the first GTs Opel used for ads (BO-ZN 678) seems to be this color, but then in other ads it looks monza blue (235).
Thanks for your help.

'Ditzler' Codes

What you need are known as 'Ditzler' Codes which tell how to mix the colours. Any half decent Auto paint shop should know about these codes.

Listed here: http://www.opelgt.com/forums/22134-post19.html for GTs'

... so much easier to search for stuff that I know is there! :)

I have a '74 Manta currently in the body shop for paint. I'm going with the original color (Signal Blue), which according to the site referenced in this thread is L224-14698. The guy painting my car mixes his own paint. He has a PPG paint station in the shop because he does a lot of custom airbrush art on cars and motorcycles. I gave him the paint code above, but he's been unable (thus far) to find a reference for the mix code. So how does he use this paint code to determine how to mix the paint?

I recently (last month) had some Signal Yellow mixed up by a PPG shop (basecoat/clearcoat) and they had no issues. I don't know what their database is like however. I just gave them the color name, color code, and country of origin (often Belgium has slightly different colors than Bochum, even with the same code).

OK...apparently the 14698 number is the Ditzler code? Once I told the painter this was likely a Ditzler code, he said he could probably cross-reference it. I guess most Ditzler codes are 4 digit?

Ditzler Codes

Yes, 14698 is the Ditzler Code but it is for an Acrylic Lacquer paint - 1970's paint technology. The problem is cross-referencing this number to a modern two-pot reaction lacquer.

The 'L224' is Opel's in-house colour code for Signal Blue.

However, Ditzler Codes are/were a widely used 'standard' paint coding and should give any well established paint mixer a fighting chance of getting a close colour match.

Paint Fabre/Color

None of the charts or codes match the manufacturer's stamped plate on the left side under the hood of Ms. Opel :

Farbe
Color 15 701

This 15 is the exterior color - I think - anyway it is a deep green enamel probably baked on the unibody - some say British Racing Green - I honestly don't know.

The 701 is the Buckskin interior color - I think

Anyone out there with the info? Thanks in advance.

The actual Ditzler paint mixture numbers (which were represented by those 2-character codes on the firewall VIN plate) for US export Opel GT's, were listed in the March/April 2009 OMC Blitz. The source for that information, is the factory bulletins that Opel issued at the start of each model year.

You should be cautious to obtain the proper mixture code (as some similar-looking shades, like 1970's "Rallye Orange" compared to 1971's "Fireglow Orange" varied between specific model years) if you are trying to repaint a GT in its original color.

#20 · (Edited)
According to the Service Bulletin #69-I-02 (cited within an overall GT paint mixture compilation in the March/April 2009 OMC Blitz), the "Ditzler Enamel Intermix Formula" for the repair of Enamel Finishes for a 1969 Opel GT with Metallic Green (Code 15) paint is #DQE-44034.

There are also Enamel formulas provided for the "Rinshed-Mason" paint (#2U30032) supplier and "Dupont Dulux" (#8475D), as well as formulas for Acrylic paint (which was applied to some European-manufactured GT's).

#23 · (Edited)
If you are trying to reproduce the original paint color by the original paint manufacturer, then I suggest approaching your local auto paint distributor and asking them to research that code number for that manufacturer.

There are other options too. The referenced factory bulletins also include breakdowns of what proportion of various "primary" colors, combine to make up that specific paint mixture. Using that data, it might be possible to reverse-engineer that formula, although consideration should be given as to whether actual components of paint blends (ie oil base vs. water base, and other chamicals) have changed since their original publication over 35 years ago.

Another option is to research the availability of colors using the factory-provided codes for the Dupont and Rinshed-Mason paint manufacturers.

Another option, would be to research the paint books of alternate German suppliers like BASF/Glazerot, or to consider a European-blend acrylic paint finish instead of the US-export enamel.

Whichever approach is best for you, should be determined in consultation with the automotive paint professional of your choosing.

The Ditzler code for Signal Blue was pretty much useless for the PPG paint shop I used when I recently had my Manta painted. The painter had a PPG rep come out and analyze the paint in an area of the trunk where the paint was still like new. The color match came out very good.

Interior color

Since my paint code is L411 702, my exterior paint is ralleye gold, but I don't see a chart for the interior color. In my search, I saw that a light tan was used with the gold, and, I ordered a headliner thinking that was the color .. wasn't. My head liner is more like a light gold. Any help appreciated.

As far as what interior color went with what exterior color, the only charts I have seen are the actual dealer brochures. The only model Opel I can think of that had a specific interior/exterior combo was the Manta Luxus. The dark and light blue Luxus had the dark blue interior, the maroon Luxus had the maroon interior, and the silver/gray Luxus had either the maroon or the silver/gray interior. Other than that, Opel really played around with the interior/exterior color combos.

Those of you who have painted your own GT's, what quantity of paint did you end up using? (Seems lots of colors are pretty pricey of late)
Thanks.
I bought two quarts of paint 50/50 mix 1 gal of spray able.... Painted the engine bay, inside belly pan, inside head light buckets 3 coats and used almost half. Bought another quart.... back to 1 gallon spray able, sprayed 3 coats and had about 1 quart mixed left.

Hope that helps.

l ID Plate. How does the color/interior info translate out? I thought there would be 2 Letter paint codes such as CC, TT, or ZZ in the lower left box of the tag

Also, in the service manuals for 1969 and 1970 models they show the vin for a GT starting with a "93", not a "94". This one clearly starts with a 94.

Did a further search and found the 93 is for 1.1 and the 94 designates a 1.9 GT. That's cleared up.

Was at the body shop and did some sanding on the GT today. The shop owner ran the 16 thru Dupont site and it is called Citrus Yellow for the 1970 GT. (maybe they did not know how to spell Chartreuse?) Also took the factory sales manual up and compared the full page color samples to the interior of the car. Definitely Chartreuse (color ZZ) in the manual.
