There's a picture in the Gold Portfolio book. I'll scan it for you if no one has one. I think the production GT is as good or better then the concept car.

Here's a couple of front pictures.
Don't know what became of the GT Prototype.

GT Prototype and others
I took these pictures probably about 1995 during an Opel GT meeting, in Ruesselsheim, Germany - where the Opel headquarters are located.
Opel showed the prototype (Experimental GT) as well as the "ocker" GT, the diesel and electric record GT's, the GT2, as well as the blue and (at that time) white Aero. Pretty amazing that they let them out of their museum, unique opportunity to see them all together !!! Dieter Last edited by BMWonly; 08-24-2007 at 04:51 AM. |

From what I have read, the production model is much more aerodynamic than the prototype. The wind tunnel tests are what drove the design team to alter the appearance of the GT.

This member has some good photo's in his album.
http://www.opelgt.com/photos/showgal.../13799/cat/500 I like the production better. The curves of it are very sexy, very few straight lines.

I'd love to know the story on the whole design process. Is that in a book somewhere? Wonder why the headlight change from ugly square vette pop ups to the way cooler oval rotaters? Damn I love those headlights.

. Yet, a Car & Driver review knocked them as ugly. Oh well, what do they know!?! I have been collecting Opel books and magazines as of late on eBay. I recently picked up an original copy of the January, 1982 "Car Collector" magazine that has the "Crystal Ball" article in it and the "Automobile Quarterly Volume 10 Number 1" from 1972 which has the "Opel GT Lives!" article in it (which also appears reprinted in the latest edition of the Blitz from the OMC). Both talk about the prototype and some of the design process as I recall. That is probably where I read about the wind tunnel tests altering the prototype design.

I agree, the production GT looks so much better from the front and back. But the side view of the Experimental GT is sleeker, because the roofline is lower. |

I can't even make eye contact with most of the TX trucks here when I am next to them, all I see is tires and the car on the other side of them.

Many reviews said that the GT was one of the very few retracting headlight cars that looked good even with the headlights up. I agree, at least they're okay when up, most other cars with retracts look bad when up IMHO. The fact that they rotate like they do is just too cool.

There's another thread on here somewhere about front license plates but here in Georgia (and several other states) we aren't required to have front plates. I'm not sure of course how that works in Canada...

All Dale has to do is to licence it here in Alberta. We're one of the few Canadian Provinces where you don't need a front plate. Or are there any others left? A few had gone that way but switched back. Oh oh,

I don't put them my truck either and have never been stopped. In other words - not enforced.........
