Lightbulb FI fuel pumps

I was forced by circumstances to do a bit of replacement part research at one of my most favored parts sites, RockAuto, so I thought I'd share my results.

My Bitter FI fuel pump froze up and has to be replaced. I knew I wouldn't be able to do a direct lookup, not even listed of course, but knew that the pump was similar to the ones used in '80s FI BMWs . . . probably other Euro cars too.

First place searched though was our very own '75 1900/Manta FI models, sadly no FI pump is listed directly under Opels anymore . . . I know it was still listed a few years ago at this site. Looked back in my Outlook "rockauto" folder and found an order from many years ago with a manufacturer's name and part number on it . . . woohoo!

The RockAuto site has a very handy "Part Number Search" tab at the top of the page, which I used to find the part again. The '75 FI pump uses a different pressure-side hose connection, 90° to pump axis, than the Bitter's puimp, in-line with pump axis.

The "Part Number Search" tab features "wild cards" so that it can also be used to search for a whole series of FI pumps from the same manufacturer, VERY handy! The P/N for the Airtex '75 Opel FI pump is E8312 and includes a photo of what it looks like.

To find an FI pump for my Bitter with the straight hose nipple at the pressure end was merely a case of searching for "Airtex" and "E82**", as there were no correct ones in my "E83**" search. The one I found for my Bitter is P/N E8228

The best part is the prices . . . $109 for the Manta pump and $87 for the Bitter!

Nice timing, since I just listed an OEM pump. LOL

What can I say, it's not factory and not a Bosch unit. Oh yeah, buy mine.

MSD also makes a quality fuel pump for around the same price as the manta's fuel pump. It is what I am using with my 2.4 EFI engine.

I have the MSD pump in my car and it is very noisy, and I do have it mounted in their rubber D shaped mounts. I have not tackled the problem yet but I will need to isolate it better or it is going to be very annoying.

When I tested the pump it didn't seem abnormally loud.

Are you running a swirl pot up front to feed the pump or is this pump feeding all the way from the main gas tank? It may be cavitation if it is the latter.

3/8" steel line direct to the pump with 2 pickups inside the tank, I don't think it is cavitation, I think it is because it is mounted to the bottom of the body and the body is acting like a sound board, I have to isolate it better I guess.

Jeff I have an electric non FI fuel pump on my Manta with rubber isolation and it is noticeable in the car. The one on my GT is hung from the rear tie point and it is hardly noticeable.

Guys, I don't know which type of pumps you have, piston or rotary, but I do know for sure the rotary pumps are a lot quieter than the piston type, by a bunch.

. . . to the best of my knowledge, all hi-pressure, above ~15PSI, FI pumps are rotary . . . TB FI pumps may not be . . .

Arrow Carb e-pumps . . . 2 types

. . . just curious, Tom, but there are basically two types of carb e-pumps, pulsed-solenoid diaphragm - the most common and noisiest, and e-motor rotary - much less common, much less noisy and slightly more expensive . . . to which one are you referring above?

Just for reference Tom, I have a low pressure/high volume pump and a high pressure pump in Willit?. When I turn the key on I can hear both of them running, until the computer turns them off. I cannot hear either of them with the engine running though.

One little side note if the pump has "walbro" on the casting stay away.

FIY for 1975 injection owners, the Airtex E8312 is normally a srocked item at Advance Auto since it's used on so many cars.
If you need one fast.
While we find your parts, please enter your ZIP Code at PartsAmerica.com

The E8228 is usually a next day part.
While we find your parts, please enter your ZIP Code at PartsAmerica.com

Looks like CarQuest stocks them too. At least the E8312.

Yes I am. There is a schematic of my fuel system somewhere in my Willit? Update thread along with pics. Also in the Projects and Articles section of the site. Basically I've got a filter and pump in the rear that feeds a surge tank up front that supplies fuel to the high pressure pump, through a filter, then to the fuel rail. The pumps put out flow continuously because I have an overflow in the front tank, high pressure (75 psi) relief and fuel rail (50 psi) relief all going back to the main tank.
