powdercoating
I am two weeks away from putting in a new motor and I want to "clean up" the engine bay as much as possible prior to getting the motor in there. I am planning on getting some stuff powedercoated in a near chrome or polished silver finish. The question is what is safe to get done and what I shouldn't do. I am not planning on powdercoating the engine itself, just the accessories to it. So I have plans for the valve cover, water pump, pulley, thermostat, some some brackets. Is is safe to do the alternator? starter? etc? |

I'm no expert, but most powdercoating I've seen bakes at 400 degrees F or more, so all the items you mentioned should be safe. You can't do the exhaust (but there are ceramic coatings for that) and whatever you want to coat has to be able to hold an electrostatic charge (anything metal and some plastics)

I do powder coating and I would not powder coat a W/pump ( seals would be damaged ).
If you remove all Ele. parts from your starter then you can powder coat the housing . You can Powder coat exhaust manifolds and headers but you must use the high temp. powders ( They cost more )and very basic colors . Opel V/Covers can be powder coated but have to be cleaned (oil will bubble up the powder coating ) and will need to be preheated to burn off any oil that is left , also need to be polished as smooth as you what ( Opel V/Covers have very rough surface ) HTH John

I've powdercoated a lot of things, and even the engine parts of a GT. I would not powdercoat starter or alternator housings, as they depend on good grounds, and honestly powdercoated items are tough to ground out properly, you have to grind off the coating. Make sure your threads on stuff are kept clean. I do not like powder coating aluminum items just from past experience of coating them, usually end up with solvent pops in it and such, but just remember to clean and maybe pre-bake. The almost chrome is nice, but I might opt to polish and then zoop seal to get the shiny look

My Wheels
Here's what the wheels I bought off of Guyopel look like in the Almost chrome not the rallyes but you get some idea. I like the traditional scheme so much, I wouldn't change it. I think that they look a little plain when they are solid cool. Powdercoated Rallyes
