I don't recall what the opening bid was, but it didn't sell. A few weeks later the seller was offering it up for rental with no takers. That must have taken a lot of work to get that thing running again. Here is the link to the discussion.

Maybe the photo didn't load because we already have it on this site. We have discussed this car here.
http://www.opelgt.com/forums/general...l-376-mpg.html I remember it didn't sell on Ebay last year, but I never heard what happened in the recent auction. Jerry |

Opels in the news
I just got a E-mail from Old cars weekly with this link, thought it was interesting. Old Cars Weekly - 1959 Opel Record Miles Per Gallon
Also the May issue of Hemmings sports & exotic car has a picture of a Opel GT racing in a SCCA race around 1973, it is on pg. 41.

There is one too many zeros in the price. 3 times $ 500 is $ 1,500, not 15,000...

I think I'd want at least one pic of a car that someone wanted 375,000 bucks for. That's the sort of hype that you'd expect to see at Barrett-Jackson. I really think that this person is looking for people to talk so they can make a KILLING off of this car.

Old Cars Weekly - 1959 Opel Record Miles Per Gallon In the article they talk about it being "lost to history," and being a "find." Why are these terms used when obviously someone previously owned it, and kept it in decent shape, but wasn't a publicity hound? Does the publicity of going to auction now make it a "find?" I don't belittle the car's history or significance, but glossing up the history in order to pump its perceived value is pretty transparent. This is done so often in the Barrett-Jackson type world, but very rarely in the Opel community (with the exception of certain eBay "persuasive writing" descriptions that pop up from time-to-time). One of the things I love about the Opel community is the lack of "marketing" of certain cars! We all appreciate a nice Opel, and those with nice Opels just tend to honestly describe, show, and share their great cars without all the hype. -Jeff W. '75, '74, & '73 Mantas |

It's back!!!
The car is back on ebay, for a starting bid of US$ 50,000, or a buy-it-now of US$ 300,000. Wow, that must be a jewel ...

Well with the price of gas these days, it might just pencil out in the long run to buy that car and use it as the daily driver. Or, run it at Bonneville, I really want to do that someday. So I couldn't go wrong either way.

Somebody obviously thinks this car is worth more than it is.
I'd pay $3000 no more. $50,000? Someone is smoking some funny dope.

376 Opel
It is amazing, when you look at the pictures how this thing was made and the materials used. I think whoever thought this out and executed the building is/was a very smart cookie
That being said, and while it looks a lot better now than when first posted, (someone did put some lipstick and makeup on that old girl) this is just another case of a car saleman trying to hit a home run (or maybe win the ball game and retire ) and I think this is bordering on the silly asking that kind of money for that car. But look at it from his viewpoint, if he gets minimum bid I'm sure he is well ahead of what he has got invested. In fact he more than likely has a small investment in it and can afford to sit on it until someone give him a very large profit on his investment, after all as they say in the car business there is a rearend to fit every seat, you just gotta match them up

From $2K to $5K to $300K in a year. Who says old Opels don't appreciate in value?
Nice resto and cleanup but with a big enough junkyard you could build your own for under $500. Jim

![]() A bit like old Apple I computers. One can build them today for a few $'s but if you find one of the originals from 1976 that sold for $666.66 you're looking at a lot more... No, I'm not buying it... |

Resto is a strange mix of some new and some stuff refreshed but not everything, and not some of the important stuff.
Car moved from East Coast to West Coast. I had talked to the previous owner about coming to Carlisle last year but they didn't make it of course. Maybe you East Coast guys should stay in contact and see if you can get them to come to one of our shows. Email is on the listing.
