Opel GT in New "Get Smart" Movie
I hope this hasn't been posted already - couldn't find a thread about it. I just got back from seeing the new "Get Smart" movie and an Opel GT does appear in the movie. Max speeds off in a Sunbeam only to have it run out of gas. He then starts to try to flag down cars when an Opel GT pulls up and the driver warns him about getting hit in traffic - at which point the GT gets rear ended!
. BTW, the movie is hilarious - I recommend it (and not just for the Opel sighting).

Yeah, not only did the movie have Don Adams' trademark Sunbeam Tiger and Opel GT, but we caught a glimpse of a somewhat familiar looking blue Karmann Ghia, too. I'm a little aghast at what happened to the Opel, though. I really hope that what we saw was either a special effect or a model custom built for the stunt. There are too few GTs left for that sort of treatment!
Though if you ask me, I think they missed a great marketing tie-in with the new Opel GT. Who wants to see Maxwell Smart tooling around Russia in a Ferrari when he coulda had an Opel GT? |

I agree - the movie was hilarious! I went this afternoon with my wife, daughter, and friend. We all enjoyed it; some cheesy parts, but in a good cheesy way. The GT scene was neat but all too brief. I didn't actually see it get hit but it gives the impression the car gets hit. Maybe a blinked. Anyway, nice GT, Tiger, and Ghia scenes. Steve Carrell is hilarious!

I just saw the movie with my wife and we both liked it a lot. The actors did a nice job in recreating the characters from the TV show. The guy driving the GT was recognized by my wife as Bernie Koppel who played Siegfried (KAOS agent and nemesis of Don Adam's agent 86). Cheesy? Ya, would you believe a good family comedy worth seeing with a helping of cheese. A lot like the TV show. And, it was the #1 movie this weekend!

I finally saw it too. Stopped the DVD on the GT. It wasn't a super nice one. Window locking strip was trashed and if the rear end hit was a special effect it was a good one, I went through frame by frame it sure looked like they plugged it good hard and for real (maybe why they didn't get too nice a one, or bother to hunt down an gold one either?). We liked the movie too.

I think we were watching the movie at the same time! I finally got to see it... Excellent movie, very funny. Here's a shot of the GT.

I feel worse for that Sunbeam after it was launched down those stairs.. that thing was destroyed!! But then again maybe they used a "stunt double" car for that scene.
The funny thing about the camera angle when the GT got hit is that is looks as though they could have had some kind of impact absorber or something on the back of it, because they never show the whole rear of the car. Either way though, that car must have suffered some serious damage. Oh yeah Anne Hatheway was great as 99. She was a good match for Steve Carell. Excellent casting. The character development was really well thought out too. Overall the movie was a perfectly styled tribute to the classic T.V. shows. The producers did a nice job of blending the old with the new.
