That would be cool to make into a street rod, not that I'd ever do that to a fine old car of course.....but still.........cool.
Hello,
There is an 1938 Opel on ebay. It pretty cool looking. It also looks like it uses some VW parts.

Personally, I would not like to see anything done do this car but restore it and/or clean things up a bit more. It's a very nice car considering the shape unrestored/distant restored cars of this era are normally. I've seen cars in much worse shape that I could care less what you do with them. I really think that the car should dictate what kind of resto or modifications that are done to it and not the owner. However, I respect what the owner does because it is in fact their car.
Needs a 2dr Ascona, everyone else has one.
If this car was of some historic value, it would certainly be worth keeping it in it's original shape. The problem would still exsit, "where am I going to get something to repair this car with". I don't see anything wrong "improving" the driveability and keeping it like a resto-rod (besides the steering wheel is already on the wrong side of the car) One persons idea of ruining something is another persons idea of making it better. I just hope if the person that gets it will do the right thing either way and do it right, not cobble it beyond repair and then stick it outside to rot to ruin.
We agree on most things here, just not keeping it original as based on its condition and rarity. I don't have a problem with modifications as long as it can be returned to original if needed and all original parts are kept. This is not neccesarily how I feel about GTs, Mantas, etc because they aren't nearly as rare but it is the way that I feel about a fairly rust free GT, Manta, etc. and the way that I feel about this fairly rust free car.

That is a Nice pre-war Opel - pics below
234 of them were imported into New Zealand by General Motors in an attempt to position themselves in the 4-cyinder market. The NZ Government did an "apples for Opels" deal - swapping two ship loads of apples for the Opels. I guess Hitler really needed the apples!
One turned up in Christchurch (in dismanted condition) but I was not even allowed to go and see it - Trish got out the whips and chains ... then threatened never to use them again if I went anywere near the Opel!
Here is another thread about 1938 Kadetts, including a letter from GM New Zealand about the ones that were brought Down Under

Sure wish I had the funds . . . but then, other than collecting some needed parts from around the world for restoration, haven't even done much with my '61 Rekord Olympia yet either!

It looks really nice. But does it have any value? I doubt it. But as a street rod it just might... different is good in that market.
Please excuse me, I can't help but change the subject.
Look in the background. I see three very nice, extremely valuable collector cars. Wow. Now, these cars are worth the most in original condition. They already are street rods, if factory equipped with the 450 hp 454 as many were, then they are (rather disputedly of course) the King of the Street.
I have witnessed them bring $120,000 on Barrett Jackson. Crazy. I got one for $1200 in 1975, new they were about $4200.

Another Manta, Charles? . . . just curious, and not that I can afford it either space- or money-wise at the moment, but how serious are you and what is your ultimate intent, stock or hot rod?

Ironically I was watching a movie this morning about WW2-era France, and the car the characters were driving was identical to this Kadett. Except it was a 'panel wagon' with a single side-hinged rear door. I almost spit out my cereal when I saw the blitz emblem on the front of the car!

Found out the name of the movie, it's called Charlotte Gray.
