    Parts ... ??

Getting parts might be fun - though it does look pretty complete.

Here are a few pics - so we will have them when the eBay listing expires.

Ok, sorry but Im not a purist on things like this. Do you all have any idea how freaking cool and unique that car would be if you chopped and sectioned it and threw a small V-8 in there. Narrow the rear end a bit and put a screaming paint job on it.

This would be such a freaking cool car

even a 2.2/4 cih would spice it up nice they are not a heavy car
the suspension/brakes would be the hard bit but might swop out to 70's opel stuff

Well that was quick... I mentioned putting it on Ebay and posting it here only yesterday. Since I didnt know what to do with the car.

Its a one owner car and in great shape for the age. The real interesting part is that its a Rekord II and a 1961 at that. The real question is that it was bought in AZ !!!! New !!! The history of Opel in the US from 1959 to 1964 has always eluded me.

I know of a few Kadett As that were sold here in 1964 but very few. Do we have anyone that knows what actually happened in those years for Opel here?

Anyway, its a great looking car and in to good of shape to be chopped and channelled. Hopefully a German will want a US Desert car to restore in Europe.

THat or it would make for a perfect little addition to Garys collection

If I had the cash I'd be all over that car...
Would make an interesting German street rod with a stroker CIH engine and period-correct wheels.

Stephen, you gonna bid on it?

Yeah, the fact that its an original owner and in such good condition would be the only reason I wouldn't mod it out like I said, but if you could find one that wasnt in such a good condition and had multiple owners, you have to admit, it'd be cool.

To consider anything but restoration back to original with a car this rare, especially here in US, is nuts!! . . . IMO . . . sorry, Bob et al.

Wish I had the room and money it'll probably take to get it. Begs the question, is it yours Charles? How are you "involved" in this?

I got a email yesterday asking if I could help sell it or what to do with it.

I told them to post with pictures here, or on EBay. That a car that rare was only going to sell in that manner.

Then this thread popped up and I got a good look at the car and felt the desire to try to get it if I could afford to.. So I bid on it and didn't break reserve.. thats about it.

I would love to restore one of these rekords, they are so cool looking. IF there was ever one to come up on Ebay for me to resotre it would be this one.. looks like with a minimal amount of work it could be running again.

Nah, not really. Though, admittedly, a 42K mile, all original 1961 Rekord II with it's well documented history does make a nice addition to mine.

I came to the US in May of 1954 and experienced the whole "Detroit Iron" hot rodding boom first hand and just plain have come to appreciate, after many years of hot rodding primarily "Detroit Iron", how unique "original metal" in any form really is.

Also discovered, quite recently, that I was among the last to go through Ellis Island Immigration processing, as it was closed down in November of 1954. I digress.

    AZ 2000 Mile Road Trip . . .

Labor Day weekend trip to fetch '61 Rekord PII from Tucson is planned thanks to Rodney's PU and trailer. Plans are to leave sometime late Friday and drive straight through. US20 and US10 are the most direct routes to Tucson from Fort Worth west. Wish us luck . . .

Looks like I'm going to be spending a lot of time at Rodney's place in the next few weeks . . .

Not only that, but car also has dimmer switch on the floor . . . what a piece of nostalgia this car turned out to be! I remember being somewhat miffed at the audacity of the car makers changing from the floor mounted dimmer switch at the time . . . same with vent windows a bit later.

This car has all three . . . 3-on-tree, floor dimmer, vent windows! . . . oh yeah, and a really unique straight 4-cylinder engine, too. The only 'four main bearing' engine (1-2-X-4-5) of its type I'm aware of.

Still gathering miscellaneous parts . . . harder than I thought. Only problem I foresee is maintaining the 6-volt electrical system . . . will have to give that some more thought. 12V conversion would simplify all things electrical immensely . . . hmmmm.
