neon exhaust

I found this on ebay..looks nice...does anyone know if this will fit
in the stock gt resonantor location?

my plan is a new 2in exhaust straight off the y pipe, over the axle, then to a muffler .such as this...

as an another option...oldopelguy said a camero f body muffler will also work in this location..any opinions?..i prefer robust sound...so i have to raise my voice at the take out window at macs...

GT Resonator

The GT rear reasonator pipe comes in from the other side and the two tail pipes are much longer but you may be able to turn that one upside down and lengthen the outlets to position them the right distance apart.

I have given up trying to find something ready made and am going to make a custom 304 Stainless unit with 2.5" inlet and
2" tail pipes. Haven't decided wheather to leave the can empty with perforated inserts in the tail pipes or try and make a proper muffler out of the can??????

Here is a stock unit:

1.1 litre Resonator

That Item on EBay #2452506227 is for a 1.1 litre engine GT which may be a bit restrictive for a 1.9l or bigger motor.

OGTS also does a Lenk big bore rear resonator PN LT2400GTO for around $288.00 and also supplies "Ansa Oval Exhaust tips, 2" for building your own resonator" PN 100020 around $49.00 each

. . .
The original parts manual lists ONLY ONE part number for the 69-73 GT "rear muffler" and includes the chrome tips (welded on).

muffler sounds

the mechanic at carx muffler shop told me today:

1-exhaust will have a deeper sound if the muffler is closer to the y-pipe

2-muffler mounted at end of car..results in a higher pitched, farty
typical rice burner sound

PS:3-do you recommend a chain(midas-carx etc) or a private muffler
shop for putting an entire exhaust on an opel gt..

4- my 2 cents: cost wise..seems the resonator location is the challenge to find cost effective, generic parts...

5-I am leaning to one generic muffler, mounted in the stock location, with a long straight pipe, over the axle and out(no resonator)....i believe this would have a deep, louder,
than stock throaty sound. ..from what I have gathered here and there

What about modifying your generic exhaust plan by either dividing the exhaust pipe at the back or having a dummy second pipe to preserve the stock look?

divide the back

I would like to divide at the back...with dual tips on each...so a total of 4 holes..saw a red gt for sale on ebay and I liked the look.

I think this would have to be a custom ,bend and weld job..maybe someone here knows.

dual tips are $14 each at carmax..2 would be needed

resonator

This is my thought on the resonator. the sound enters the inlet at the side, some of the sound exits, and the rest bounces off the opposite side before exiting thus doubling the sound waves. This takes the 4 cyl sounds and turns them into an 8 cyl sound. which also depends the sound like a drum. But a deep toned muffler right behind the Y makes a big difference. I maybe way off, but makes sense to me.

Do a search. There are a lot of threads on this topic.

Heres one that has the Camaro set up and photos of the custom exhaust on Wayne Torman's Purple GT.

That is a very nice looking setup, tekenaar. What muffler uses the dual-out? I've seen them before but can't remember on what!

The deepest, throatiest, nicest sounding stock mufflers I've ever heard on any car are on 427/454 Corvettes. These are mounted at the end of the exhaust system and are true dual exhaust w/o cross-over. They uses 2.25" pipes. Motorweek used them for their closing.

Although friction wipes out some of the signal, exhaust harmonics have little to do with the muffler location. (Pipe organs have pipes up to 43' long.) A lot of the ricy sound comes from the muffler and valve timing, as does the deep throaty sound on Vettes.

Bucky, you've heard my GT.

That sound is due to header pipes and a resonator.

No muffler is in the system.

The response I got from talking with some exhaust folks was, a muffler would not cut out the deep sound the headers are allowing down the tube.

I also needed to add more sound insulatation around the fuel tank to absorb some of the sound coming into the car.

My 73 GT had just the muffler and no resonator and the sound was tuned down more so than what I have now.

Resonator from autozone

I went into Autozone, and asked them if they could get the resonator for me. they found a supplier. You have to give them the following information, because by default it will not come up in their computers.

Bosal 185-582
It is referenced as a muffler.

Autozone price is
$74.99
