how well does the transverse leafspring suspension work? would it be worth some type of coil spring conversion?

They can be modified to work very well, in my experience. They are tune-able but you have to put your thinking cap on. There are lots of examples, tips, and stories about it at this site.
In my situation I will be starting over with front spring setup, am going to ditch the stock spring leaves and use the lowering spring from the beginning. Still need shackles, though, to prevent the severe bind that occurs when the spring is compressed.
What is it that you will be doing with your car, why do you need improvement to the suspension?

Test "Mule"

The GT was conceived as a hi-speed test 'mule' for the Kadett front suspension and the new Record rear suspension on the new Opel Russelheim test track.
Testing was undertaken up to 140 mph and over many varying surfaces.
Consequently the GT front suspension is a well developed independent A-arm front suspension ... albeit with a cart spring!

The Manta/Isuzu Impulse coil spring front suspension is a little more modern but still has 'issues' - not the least being harder to get parts for.

The GT/Kadett 'cart spring' suspension can be considerably refined - without removing the cross spring - the biggest upgrade available is the sway bar ... which they all should have had from day one.

A set of spring shackles (to remove the 'bind' as the spring flexes); urethane bushes; new ball joints; a sway bar with high quality gas adjust shocks; and a set of zugstrebe bars will go a long way to making it all work as Opel intended.

Will any homebuilt coil spring replacement have even a tiny fraction of the development time and money spent on it than that invested by Opel in the original ??
