For those not familiar with the weather here in N.C. Spring in April can be chilly. The Fall show is generally warmer. Hth, Jarrell

2008 Opel Nationals
Since there are two AutoFair's each year, one in April and the other in September, we have a choice as to which one we can hold our National Meet.
I have been leaning towards the Fall meet in September for a couple of reasons. The first is the fact that Carlisle is very close to the Spring AutoFair and I am not sure there would many many of you who would want to make long trips back to back like that. The other reason is weather. The Spring AutoFair is in April and it can be cold during the morning hours. The Fall show is always warmer and if it does rain, it is usually just a passing shower. But the weather is usually good at both shows. I just wanted to pass some thoughts along before you vote. We will be making the dates for the 2008 Opel Nationals set in the near future. I will be going to the 2007 Opel Nationals this September in Springfield, Ill. I hope many of you can make it as well!

AutoFair Information
The AutoFair is not only on the outside of the "Charlotte" Motor Speedway, but the main body of the AutoFair is on the infield of the 1 1/2" mile oval track with vendors, car clubs and 1000's of cars for sale. There are people who are not with a club who just want to bring their cars to show off. Over 100,000 people pay to come to the AutoFair each Spring and Fall to see our car clubs, buy from vendors, buy from the car auctions, just look around, etc. The AutoFair is run for four days for a reason. It is impossible to go through the whole thing in just one or two days. You would also need a good pair of comfortable shoes, too! The AutoFair is advertised as the largest car show on the east coast and maybe the whole country.
The AutoFair started out as a "Muscle Car" show but has progressed to the point where not only our Opels are there (one has actually won the whole "Best In Show" over all the car clubs), but other foreign car clubs are starting to show up as well such as Jaguar, BMW and MG's! I have already begun talking to the Speedway people about the "National Opel Show" coming to the AutoFair in 2008 and they assured me we would get a "pristine" spot to show off our Opels and the OANA. They are going to work with us to do this thing right!!! Remember the 2007 Opel Nationals in Springfield, Ill. this coming September!

Guys, is this at Lowe`s Motor Speedway in Concord, NC? I am seriously thinking about taking a friend with me over to have a look at this. We`ve been talking of doing something like this for a few years. Also, is the nearest international airport the Charlotte Douglas International? What about hotels or motels in the area?

Hallgeir,
Yes, the AutoFair is at the Lowe's Motor Speedway, just north of Charlotte, North Carolina. There are great hotels within a mile of the speedway and the Charlotte Douglas International Airport is nearby. I will be setting up a hotel with reserved rooms in the near future for the 2008 Opel Nationals which will be held September 11th through the 14th, 2008. West Coast GT, As for the Nationals being at Bonneville, that is the first I have heard of it being held there. Maybe someone should speak up about this before I plan any further for the Nationals at Charlotte in 2008! I thought all this was decided at Carlisle last May. I know the 2009 and 2010 Nationals were undecided but the talk was either Texas or somewhere on West Coast for those years. Thanks,

if you are planning on coming over, Charlotte is THE place to go. Not only for the Opels, but the AutoFair itself is absolutely fabulous. Bring walking shoes, it's HUGE! Dieter

Charlotte Works
I can run over to Fort Bragg and see my daughter before she ships off to Indonesia for next few years.
The track tour is pretty good but you need to tour Talladega to really check out the steep banks its unbelievable. The Texas group will have a spring meet and we can discuss which year and were to host the meet. San Antonio, Austin, DFW or TMS.

Well, I am already starting to feel like a child in a toy store about this. I have a friend in Rocky Mount, NC that also drives a GT, and is a true "cars guy". I`ll have to talk to him about this, and the possibility to either meet him there, or to go to Rocky Mount and drive with him to the Auto Fair. Need to do some planning here. I will be watching this thread closely.

Hallgeir,
You are more than welcome to come over here and be a part of a great time at the 2008 Opel Nationals! There will be more North Carolina Bar-B-Que and Baby Back Ribs than you can eat, so come with a empty stomach! More information on the 2008 Nationals will be coming after the 2007 Opel Nationals in Springfield, Ill. are over. We are still in the early planning stages and I don't want to take away from the Springfield event, which sounds like it will be a great event, too! Keep watching for news later....

Hee Hee Hee.... Hotel Ooooner... That does have a ring to it! I like it! Of course, anyone is welcome to stay at our small home but Harold, you may be having to "spoon" with Otis when you are sleeping if too many show up!

Sounds like that famous scene from "Deliverance" where they made Ned Beatty squeal like a pig. My sleeping bag only has room for one, besides wouldn't that make us, kinfolk? It's your turn in the barrel! Harold |

Just a quick line to let everyone know the Spring AutoFair went off without a hitch. 8 cars were there and everyone had a great time. Roy Bell will be doing the write up, and I am in the process of resizing pictures for uploading this afternoon/evening. The rains missed us, and we had the pleasure of having our cars judged by John and Connie Dickerson. It was a great event and I'm happy to have met people I've talked to on the board, and put faces with the names. Truely a fun time was had by all. The only problem was not enough time to talk to people. I think the 08 meet will be enjoyed by all. I certainally enjoyed meeting Tom Cavanaugh and Tom Adkins with his 1.1. We, (Tom C) even found another original part on his Toms 1.1 that he didn't know about!
