Robin, Welcome to the forum. There are about a dozen GTs here inSANe Diego. We have a San Diego Chapter of the Opel Motorsport Club (OMC) which has an annual picnic at Huntington Beach in August. Jim Marchitto of USAOpel is our chapter pres. His establishment is just south of Temecula off I-15. Gil Wesson of Opel GT Source (OGTS) is putting on the picnic this year. For parts on your GT, they are the local sources. When this site gets totally up and running there will be links to both these establishments and others across the country for parts sources. Welcome aboard and be mindful of "Opelitis", a malady that for some inane reason causes Opel owners to have their cars multiply beyond comprehension.

I presently have a '73 GT. It was up to its door handles in the Kalamzoo river when I bought it (high water that spring - I believe 1987). I trailered it home, drained water out of the engine and trans (auto) and drove it daily. I gradually transferred over interior parts, seats, dash etc from a '70 GT that was my previous dd. Eventually, I also swapped in the engine (9.0:1) and trans (stick) from the '70. The '70 was then stripped and hauled to the junkyard. It was too badly rusted to resurrect.

Hiya and thanks for the "welcome"
![]() "inSaneDiego" hahahaha... goodd one!! I used to be a member of the OMC club many moons ago... I'll probably join again now that there is a San Diego chapter (more involvement) and now that I may actually get my GT on the road (it was looking like that might NEVER happen). As far as "Opelitis" goes I think I may already be infected! I have had a love for this Opel since I was young and have hung onto it through tough life situations (almost sold it many times!). Anyways... Thanks again for saying "hi"... ![]() Take care, Robin (sdopel36) |

I have owned 6 or 7 drivers and parts cars since 1979 when I got my first GT, before that had a new 1973 Manta bought in Elgin Il., and a new 1900 Opel wagon I drove til 1986. Also owned a nice 67 Kadette Rallye 1.1, and a 68 kadette Sport Coupe (most parts still occupy my basement!), but bought a GT from Oklahoma 6 years ago which has never had any rust, and just a month ago bought a 2nd 70 GT off of E-Bay, the blue automatic one in Topeka, Ks. It was actually a California car 'til 1994, then went to Alabama, then on to Kansas. I've removed the interior and the inner doors, quarters, and front fenders have never been cut into, and are very solid. Thank God for California! I've got a solid metal belly pan I bought new in 1979 and never used(moved it 3 times!)and a
new battery box to go on it, and needs just a little repair to the lower radiator support. Should have it set to go by next spring. The head is off for a valve job and hardened seats, and the cylinders look A1.

I bought a 72GT (Euro) in 1998. Interior was perfect with a new headliner and new carpet and the car was running spit-spot. Used it as daily driver in my final year of college and then drove it from Tennessee to Idaho for graphic design internship. What a trip. You meet the most interesting people when your broke down in an opel on the interstate. Tore up clutch while i was out there and put a new one in. Then when i drove it home, tore up the trans. Later found out one of the brackets that hold the bellhousing in place had fallen off and bellhousing was all cracked to hell and sagging caused trans breakdown. So traded a sentra with a blown motor for a 4sp trans from a manta, slapped it in and ran the car for 3 days promptly seizing the motor. That was two and a half yrs ago and cars been sitting waiting for $$$. So now i'm back at it. rebuilding motor. Top end is going to shop for cleaning/honing and i'm pulling the bottom end and takin' it apart this wkend 2 see what happened. This Forum will DEFINITELY be a valuable asset in this rebuild.

I'm turning 17 in Feb. and I just got my license a few months ago. My uncle who lives in Tennessee is selling me his 1970 Opel Gt. I know hardly anything about cars but I know that it doesn't have any rust, and it doesn't have the original engine because those were "unpredictable". I can't wait to get it so I can clean it up, of course, I need to learn how to drive a stick shift first!!

GT's ? with the Targa I now have a 69, 71, 72 & 73 I would love a 68 and can always find a 70 to complete the set. I had one but sold it
'69 has been in the family since early 70's but is rusted badly yet runs like new. The Black 73 I bought in 74 for $2400 and is the one that went to OMC 25 and now lives in AZ. The 72 is supposed to become a V8 I have the 2 - 2 door 1900's, one for NY and one for AZ but need a Sportwagon |

Motor Mouths Update
Well I had a look on here and noticed that back in 2003 I was the 5 or 6th person to post a thread on here.
Nearly 2yrs have passed and so it's only far that I give you an update, so here goes: In 2004 i broke another '69 for spares. In 2005 i owned a '68......which generated a fair amount of interest when it came on the market. It turned out that this car was the 3rd oldest on the German Opel GT register, In 2006 (as of yesterday) I've just agreed to buy a '72 GT. So there you have it....I've had a full house of GT's 68-73!

I wonder if we should do another poll that reads:
How Many GT's do you have that are/will be put on the road? and How many GT's do you KNOW have been crushed or will NEVER be put on the road? |

I own a 1900 s in a porsche 924 body
I picked up a 1977 prosche that had a 1.9 L Opel engine in it. I was unable to id the year of the engine until I researched it in this community. The only ID I had on the engine was the engine serial number of 19s-1136264. From the posts here I determined it is a 1972 or 1973 1900 engine. This will help me get parts for the engine.

Yeah you're right Lyle,
I've got four GT's in my garage, so that makes at least 580 GT's left! 1) early 1969 Rallye Red with flat rear panel and missing split front bumper (Vin # falls within the range but P.O. removed it!) complete with 13" Fenton SS mags, trailer hitch and a mysterious (likely bogus) gold plaque on the dash that reads "Opel GT Special Edition". 2) 1969 GT Metallic Green w tan interior Italian Spec GT complete with all the original Italian/Euro equiptment such as: side repeater blinkers, halogen headlights and driving lights, "H" cylinder head, electric windshield washer, no rear side markers, non-laminated windshield, KPH speedometer, front & rear sway bars, etc. 3) 1971 Rallye Gold GT with beige interior. Rear axle has factory sway bar mounting points. Needs to have the driverside fender and headlamp mounting points repaired after a P.O.'s botched attempts of collision repair. 4) early 1973 Strato Blue GT with black interior. Comes with ARA Air Conditioning and the original solex carb still attached as well as the original version of the taillights. Now if I could just figure out what connected the carb to the relocated air cleaner near the battery! 5) last but not least (but not a GT) is my recently acquired 1973 Manta Blue Max which will need most of the interior replaced corduroy, carpet, headliner, as well as the vinyl roof - pretty much anything not made of metal! -Jonzo

With that many you can have your own Zephyrhills car meet! ![]() I was thinking maybe 10,000 - 15,000 GT's left in the world? Gil at OpelGT source might have a better guess. Lyle |
